Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Palestine
Fishing around Palestine, Texas is dominated by Lake Palestine, but the Neches River, smaller reservoirs, and countless stock tanks also produce excellent action. This is classic East Texas fishing—stained water, standing timber, creek channels, and abundant shallow cover that keeps fish accessible all year.
Seasonal patterns are straightforward but rewarding if you track water temperature and lake level. In late winter and early spring, largemouth bass stage on main-lake and secondary points, creek channel swings, and the first big breaks outside spawning pockets. Slow-rolled spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, and Carolina-rigged soft plastics are go-to options. As the water pushes into the 60s, bass, crappie, and sunfish move shallow to spawn along protected coves, flooded brush, docks, and shoreline reeds—this is prime time for pitching soft plastics, wacky-rigged worms, and crappie jigs around visible cover.
Through summer, focus on deeper structure and shade. On Lake Palestine, bass and hybrid striped bass relate to humps, ledges, and the river channel, especially where timber or brush intersects contour changes. Drag Texas rigs, football jigs, and big worms along these drops, and keep a spoon or swimbait ready for schooling hybrids and white bass busting shad on the surface. Catfish action peaks as water warms; target channel and blue cats along channel edges, wind-blown points, and baited holes with cut shad or punch bait. Night fishing around lighted docks and bridge pilings can be outstanding for both catfish and crappie.
Fall brings shallow baitfish migrations. Work reaction baits—squarebill crankbaits, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits—along wind-blown banks, creek arms, and flats with scattered timber. White bass and hybrids chase shad aggressively; watch for birds and surface activity and cast small spoons or tail-spinners into the commotion. As water cools, crappie stack on deeper brush piles, bridge pilings, and standing timber in 15–25 feet; use vertical presentations with small tube jigs or live minnows just above the fish.
Key habitat types around Palestine include standing timber, laydowns, boat docks, riprap, and creek channels. On Lake Palestine, map out major creek arms—such as Flat Creek and Kickapoo Creek—and follow the channel bends, especially where they swing close to flats or shorelines. In smaller lakes and ponds, target any visible wood, weed edges, or dam riprap, rotating between faster search baits and slower bottom-contact lures until you find active fish.
Practical tactics for this area start with matching water color and forage. Stained East Texas water favors chartreuse-and-white spinnerbaits, black-and-blue jigs, and green pumpkin plastics. For crappie, use natural shad or monkey-milk colored jigs on light line; for catfish, prioritize fresh cut bait over store-bought options. Wind is your ally—fish windward banks and points where bait is pushed in. Electronics help, but even without them, methodically working points, channel swings, and visible cover will consistently produce around Palestine, Texas.
