Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Sacramento
Sacramento sits at the crossroads of the Sacramento River, American River, and the upper California Delta, giving local anglers access to some of the most productive freshwater and tidal fisheries on the West Coast. Within a short drive of downtown, you can target striped bass, salmon, catfish, trout, and panfish from shore, kayak, or power boat.
Seasonal patterns are key. Spring brings American shad and the first consistent striped bass push up the Sacramento and American rivers. Shad respond well to 1/16–1/8 oz jigheads tipped with small grubs or shad darts worked on a slow swing in the current, especially near current seams and below riffles. Stripers in spring favor swimbaits, soft jerkbaits, and cut bait fished along channel edges, flooded sandbars, and around bridge pilings. Summer shifts the focus toward warmwater species: largemouth bass in Delta-connected sloughs, channel catfish in deep river holes, and bluegill and crappie in marinas and backwaters. Fall is prime time for Chinook salmon and another strong striper run, with fish holding on breaks in current and deeper troughs. Winter brings steelhead into the American River and concentrates resident stripers and catfish in slower, deeper stretches.
Habitat variety around Sacramento is a major advantage. The main Sacramento River is broad with strong current, deep shipping channels, and long outside bends; these spots are classic for stripers, sturgeon, and catfish. Target depth changes from 15–40 feet with live or cut bait on sliding sinker rigs, positioning your bait just on the downstream side of a ledge. The American River, by contrast, is a more defined tailwater with riffles, runs, and pools that set up perfectly for salmon, steelhead, and trout. Focus on travel lanes just off the fastest current and the heads and tails of deeper pools.
In the nearby Delta sloughs and flooded islands, weeds, tule lines, and submerged wood dominate. Largemouth bass relate closely to shade lines and weed edges—early and late in the day, work topwater frogs and walking baits tight to the tules; mid-day, switch to flipping jigs, Texas-rigged plastics, or chatterbaits along outside weed walls where current brushes against vegetation. For crappie and bluegill, target docks and marina basins using small jigs under a float, adjusting depth until you tick the top of submerged brush or pilings.
Presentation details matter in this area’s often pressured water. Downsizing line and leaders can dramatically improve the bite, especially in the clearer American River; 6–10 lb fluorocarbon for trout, shad, and steelhead is standard. On the more off-colored Sacramento River and Delta, heavier gear is acceptable—20–30 lb braid with fluorocarbon leaders for stripers and sturgeon helps control fish in heavy current. Boat anglers gain a big advantage by using electronics to follow channel edges and bait schools, but shore anglers can be just as effective by keying on obvious structure: bridge pilings, riprap bends, confluences with small creeks, and any point where fast water meets slow. Time your trips around low-light periods and tidal movement in the Delta-connected sections to intersect actively feeding fish.
