  • Mark, weather forecast -- Saturday, 14 Nov 2009

    Hi Ashraf

Thanks for your comment. I'm afraid there is not much I can do about the accuracy of the weather forecast. I don't produce the weather forecast, it comes from weatherbug. I've found it quite accurate for most places in the world. But for some locations it might not always produce the best results. The only thing I could think of, is to provide the option to choose from alternative weather providers in the future, such as yahoo weather for example.

    Cheers Mark

  • Mark Totzke, Daylight savings -- Sunday, 4 Oct 2009

    Hi Andrew.
Thanks for you comment. You don't have to worry about daylight savings time. All fishing times and tide times at fishing reminder account for daylight savings.

  • Andrew, Daylight Savings -- Sunday, 4 Oct 2009

    Hi Mark,

This is a great site, I don't know what you use to get the ratings and major times but when I first saw it I doubted it because it predicted the major time to be at the middle of the day during dead low tide period however when fishing, the fish really started to pick up at that time! Amazing.

Just a question, I live in Adelaide, South Australia. Just wondering we have just entered daylight savings period, does the major and minor time predictions take that into account? Or do I have to add an extra hour onto it such as reading a tide guide?

    Regards

    Andrew

  • Mark, re: fishing report -- Tuesday, 25 Aug 2009

Hi Pastor, Thanks for adding your fishing report. I'm glad I could save you some time ;-)
  • Mark, re: fishing weather -- Tuesday, 25 Aug 2009

    Hi Randy,
The Major and Minor Times tell you at what time of the day you can find the best action for that particular day.
But if other factors such as weather, water temperature, water visibility, etc are not favorable, then this will most likely offset the effects of the Solunar Periods. When the water is too cold or too warm fish tend to be lethargic and inactive even during the predicted feeding periods.
So in short the best fishing times will give you a good indication of when its a good time to be on the water, but you will also need to consider all other factors - especially weather conditions before making your decision of when to go fishing.
  • Pastor, Fishing report -- Friday, 21 Aug 2009

I used your web site and went fishing yesterday. I normally like to be there when the sun comes up, but yesterday waited until almost 10:00 AM before getting to the lake because your site said the best bite would be between 12:30 and 2:30 PM. It worked out very close. I started catching crappie about 10:30 and they shut off at 1:30. Thanks for saving me some time to sleep in.
  • randy, thanks -- Friday, 21 Aug 2009

thank you mark for answering my question. I have another question and it might not be a new question, but here it goes. Where I live in the Portland Oregon area, the major times for this period show it's at 12 - 2 in the afternoon. So is that when the bite will be the best - even when its hot?
  • John McGregor, Welcome -- Thursday, 20 Aug 2009

Am from Simcoe , Ontario Canada, am gettin real tired of not pickin the best times ta go fishin. Hope this here website helps. great site guys
  • Mark, -- Thursday, 20 Aug 2009

    Hi Randy,
According to the Solunar Theory (by John Alden Knight), the major and minor times will apply to any fish. In fact they will even work for any other animals. Many people use Solunar Tables for bird watching and hunting. Animals tend to be more active during these times because their feeding schedule is closely related to the moon cycle - which in return is the basis for the calculation of the best feeding times.
  • randy, any fish? -- Thursday, 20 Aug 2009

just wondering....? are these times for any type of fish? im just wondering for bass fishing.. well steelhead and salmon too. thank you.
  • Mark, re: poor day after new moon -- Tuesday, 18 Aug 2009

    Hi Jason

Thanks for bringing that up. It must be a bug when matching the days. I will fix it as quick as possible. That day should definitely have a good day rating.

update: fixed the issue, day has 3 star rating now as expected.
  • jason, poor day not adding up -- Tuesday, 18 Aug 2009

strange that you have fri august the 21st as a poor day for main beach the Gold coast, Australia. It is the day after the new moon and the maori calender says its a great day and the best times also coincide with dawn/dusk so whats the problem that your algorithm has with that day ?

thanks alot for a great site
  • Harry Hocking, -- Monday, 17 Aug 2009

Thanks heaps Mark for setting up this site, i only signed up Saturday out of curiosity and went fishing Sunday morning with my wife and son. We got totally smashed during the times you stipulated and had our best fishing trip in three years. Can't wait for our next trip to test out your times.
    Thanks heaps again Mark

  • Mark, re: Maori Fishing Calendar -- Thursday, 13 Aug 2009

    Hi Bedrug,
thanks for your feedback. I think there are a few different versions of the maroi fishing calendar out there. I've been using the day ratings from an old fishing book that was written by Bill Hohepa. Thats probably why there are slight differences to the calendar you mentioned. I have written the algorithms that calculate the best fishing times myself.
  • bredug, Feedback -- Thursday, 13 Aug 2009

Great site Mark, thanks and well done...I look forward to trying it out and will be sure to post the outcome after trying it out for while.

I was comparing your daily ratings with the "Rothery's maori fishing calandar" published in a local fishing mag here and the correlation was very close except for the odd few days which contradicted...e.g. New Moon is good on here but only fair on rothery's... sany thoughts as to why this may be? (In no way a critisism, just trying to understand it all).

Did you write the algorithim's yourself?

    thanks
    Bredug
  • Mark, Cat Fish -- Sunday, 9 Aug 2009

Good question. I guess I didn't add it cause there aren't any catfish around here in NZ where I go fishing ;-) Will add it to the options.
  • Trinidad, Polls -- Sunday, 9 Aug 2009

On the polls why does it not include Catfish? They would have to be one of the most fished in my area.
  • mark, re: moon calendar -- Friday, 7 Aug 2009

    Hi there Fab,

The difference between the 30 day fishing forecast and the moon calendar is that the moon calendar shows you what day rating fishing reminder assigns to each day of the moon phase starting with day 1 = new moon. Currently it is using the maori fishing calendar.

On the 30 day forecast those day ratings are matched to the actual days of the current month.

In other words the moon calendar tab serves only as a reference, while the fishing forecast gives you the concrete predictions per date.

    Hope that makes sense.
  • Fab, star rating -- Thursday, 6 Aug 2009

    Hi,
Just wondering why under different tabs ie: moon calendar or 30 day forecast or today's fishing their seems to be different amount of stars for the same day... I'm just wondering if I am reading this wrong ?

Thank you and fantastic site by the way all the info is there " the only thing is if I could suggest something is adding a link for wave buoys or wave heights for that day .... "

    Great work keep it up
  • Nova, i think it works! -- Friday, 31 Jul 2009

thanks for the great site i will continue to test out the fishing predictions and hopefully get a better success rate.

I have been telling everyone to try this site out.
  • Mark, re: Mansoor -- Sunday, 19 Jul 2009

I was planning to extend fishingreminder to work on mobile phones. An initial step will be to to view fishingreminder in your blackberry's web browser.
I'm almost finished with this feature.
  • Donald, Fish on! -- Sunday, 19 Jul 2009

Awesome! thanks to you i have had better fishing then i ever had. One word sums it all up..... WOOOH! Keep up the awesome work!
  • Owen, Thanks -- Saturday, 18 Jul 2009

    G'day,
Just a quick note to say thanks for making such a great tool available.
    Very impressive!
If I could make one suggestion it would be the option to only have reminders sent if the best fishing days fall on certain days (such as weekends)
That way we don't get as depressed when we are at work and it's glassed out on the reef and all other signs are perfect ;-)
  • mansoor, blackberry app -- Friday, 17 Jul 2009

    Thanks
  • CHRIS, times,tides and rating -- Thursday, 16 Jul 2009

Great site. Good info. Will try again on Saturday for King and Spanish Mackrel

    Interesting articles as well.
    Keep the site going
  • Mark, re: New moon date downunder -- Monday, 13 Jul 2009

It seems that the actual time of New Moon (0%) is at 2:35 pm on Wed, 22 July ( for Auckland ).
Fishing Reminder calculates the Moon Phase for each day at midnight, to keep the predictions consistent throughout the day.
That means at 00:00, Wed 22 July the moon illumination is still at 1%.
Therefore the 0% illumination is shown for Thursday instead of Wednesday.

I don't think this is a problem, because all days around new moon have
a similar high day rating - so it won't alter the prediction for best days to go fishing.
But thanks for bringing this to my attention. I will investigate a bit further into this issue.

PS: I'm glad you had such great fishing results - thanks for sharing.
  • Dean Bennett, New moon date downunder? -- Sunday, 12 Jul 2009

Hi, I am very happy with my results from using fishing reminder, My choice to use three star days started with a 7 pound rainbow, and an 8 pounder on Lake Tarawera New Zealand not long after on a two star day. It has broken my drought to calculate the best days to go fishing with excellent results. They are my best fish in years!! caught within two months! But please I am confused. Metservice New Zealand shows the New Moon to be on Wednesday 29th July while Fishing Reminder shows 0% Moon to be on Thursday 30th July! Please reply to stop my confusion! This may alter my best days to go fishing?

  • mark, Re: Question -- Wednesday, 24 Jun 2009

    Hi John

    Thanks for your question.
The best fishing times are calculated area specific - depending on your latitude and longitude, local time and timezone.
Initially your location is auto-detected from your IP address.
You can then always pinpoint your exact location on the map and the times will adjust.

Times are calculated on the server from moonrise/set, sunrise/set, moonphase, tidestatation, etc.

    check out this article

There I tried to explain how things work.

    Cheers
    Mark

  • Mark, History -- Monday, 22 Jun 2009

    Hi Simon

At the moment it is not possible to view past dates.
I'm planning to introduce some new features soon.
One of them will be a fishing diary.
This will allow you to log your fishing trips and view relevant information for any date.

    Cheers

PS: Many thanks to everyone for the positive feedback and for using fishingreminder.

  • Nigel, Email reminder -- Monday, 18 May 2009

    Hi Mark

This looks a great site I am sure it will be of help to lots of anglers.
The only problem I am having is trying to set the email reminder.
I am probably doing something wrong. I am selecting all the check boxes for best times and the good and excellent check boxes for day rating. Then setting the reminder for 2 days and 1 day and clicking save changes but nothing seems to happen.
When I log back in all the settings are defaulted. What am I doing wrong?

    Cheers

    Nigel.
  • Mark, Star Ratings -- Sunday, 17 May 2009

    Hi Adam,

    Thanks for your comment.

    Check out this Article.
I hope that will answer your questions.

Additionally have a look at the Moon Calendar Tab.
It shows you the current ratings that I'm using for each day of the mooncycle.

Those are based on the Maori fishing calendar.

    Hi Mark,
Great site! and an original idea. I was just curious as to what the star rating bases its scores on and how the times are generated? What variables are the scores dependent on?

  • Mark, Tides -- Saturday, 16 May 2009

    Hi simplybob

Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you like my site.

The Tide predictions on the BBC Site are probably more correct.

I'm using a program called xtide to calculate tides based on harmonic data.

So the tides here are just rough estimates.

I found that they are quiet accurate for most tide stations around the world, but not for all.

Don't rely on the tide times here, but rather take them as rough guidelines to accompany the best times for your location.

    Cheers

  • Mark, Howto Save The Home Postion -- Tuesday, 12 May 2009

    Hi JT,

If you log in and select your location it will be automatically saved.

And the next time you visit this site, your home position will be selected and shown by default.

Just remember to select the "remember me" checkbox next time you log in.
That way you don't have to type in your details each time you come to this site and you can always quickly see the best times for your location.

    Cheers

  • Trader2, My Location -- Tuesday, 12 May 2009

How do I lock in my home fishing location, or do I need to reenter it each time I log on? I think This is a great idea. Wish there was something like it in the USA.
    Thanks,
    JT
  • Mark, Update -- Sunday, 3 May 2009

Hi there - It is now possible to view the weather infos in imperial units for American Standards.

The units for your location will be auto-detected by default.

In case the auto-detection fails, you can click on "imperial" or "metric" to choose what you prefer.

Your selection will be remembered the next time you visit this site.
  • Mark, Temperature -- Sunday, 3 May 2009

Hi Brian and David - Thanks for you comments.
I completely forgot that you guys use farenheit over there :-)
I will provide an American Standard as quick as possible.
    Cheers and happy fishing.
  • brian, -- Sunday, 3 May 2009

You should change the temp, wind speed, and brametric pressure to an American standard, or atleast allow the user to pick which system of measurement to use.
  • David Trevino, -- Sunday, 3 May 2009

Awesome site. Only one thing I have a problem with is the temp. I have trouble converting it from celsius to fehrenheit. Other than that, great tool.
