River Mulloway in swan river | Category: Fishing Reports

I often spend a whole night trying to hunt down a river mulloway, usually around new moon or 3-4 days after. I Have tried all types of techniques. I catch the live bait and let it do it's thing but it is a patience game. I had 3 hits around the last new moon on an all nighter, unfortuantly every line gave way to the massave runs. Last night near the narrows i had a live tailor and it went for a big run. I used a uni not to join my braid to leader this time. For some reason this knot seems to be more efficiant than a swivel as i landed my first fish which gave me curry for an hour and a half, so many times in the past i had run and then a snap of as i was to keen to tighten the drag thinking the run was over,Now that i have experienced this i have learnt to compose myself and suss out my drag limits as that bait can be spat after a few runs, so you must be patient. Is a uni knot stronger than tying a swivel , the fish was around the 20kilo mark. Has anyone had similar techniques or more effecient ways of targeting mulloway in the swan river. Ocean mulloway tend to be a easier catch from expierience as i have had half as many problems with hooking them without spitting hooks.

I must admit that I never heard of Mulloway before.
Had a look on google - looks like an exciting fish to catch.
Are you based in Australia?

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

Yes mate there a dream for most keen anglers in the swan river , A lot of skill involved in landing them as some anglers may never find themselves landing one because of their ferocious runs and ability to spit the bait out after maybe taking 50 metres off your line. In the ocean your more chance off getting a schoolie mulloway usually round the 8- 12 kilo mark and i found they not as fussy, live bait is always worthwhile. Mulloway fishing is a challenge, it keeps me interested without having to take a boat out to land a 20kg plus fish.

It seems that their behaviour, size and fighting abilities are similar to kingfish over here in New Zealand.

I would always use a double unit knot for joining braid and leader. It's way stronger then joining with a swivel.

Do you use a balloon to keep the live bait up top or do you just let it swim?
