Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 10:54 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

Tide Coefficient at 11:51 am is 95

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Karratha

Karratha fishing revolves around rich offshore reefs, productive inshore islands and mangrove-lined creeks that hold bait year-round. The Dampier Archipelago, Nickol Bay and the Burrup Peninsula give anglers access to sheltered waters in most wind directions, with options for both lure and bait fishing.

Seasonal patterns are driven by the hot tropical climate and strong tides. From September to April, warm water brings peak action for spanish mackerel, tuna, sailfish and marlin along current lines, pressure points and reef edges. The cooler months from May to August see reliable reef fishing for red emperor, rankin cod, coral trout and spangled emperor, while inshore creeks still produce mangrove jack, threadfin and bluebone.

Inshore, the mangrove systems and creek mouths around Nickol Bay and up toward the Fortescue River are prime ground for barramundi, threadfin salmon, mangrove jack and estuary cod. Look for bait flicking on the edges of drains on a falling tide and fish hard structure: rock bars, snags and deep bends. Soft plastics in the 3–5 inch range, prawn imitations and shallow-diving hardbodies are consistent producers; run them as close to structure as you can without snagging, using a slow, twitch-and-pause retrieve.

For land-based anglers, rock platforms and beaches on the Burrup Peninsula and around Dampier offer access to queenfish, trevally, tailor, bream and whiting. Dawn and dusk high tides are best; cast metal slugs, stickbaits or lightly weighted pilchards into the wash and current seams. Keep a heavier outfit rigged with a wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader so you can quickly switch to targeting mackerel or bigger trevally when they blitz bait close to shore.

Offshore, the Dampier Archipelago’s reefs, bombies and drop-offs hold a mix of emperors, trout and cod. A classic approach is to drift over broken ground in 15–40 m, dropping paternoster rigs with fresh squid, mullet or strip baits. To specifically target coral trout and bluebone, focus on shallow reef edges and isolated coral heads; use strong tackle, abrasion-resistant leader and be prepared to lock up immediately to keep fish out of the reef.

When chasing pelagics, troll hardbody diving lures or rigged garfish along contour lines, reef edges and around bait balls. Keep an eye on bird activity, surface bust-ups and sharp colour changes where clear ocean water meets greener inshore water. Longtail tuna respond well to small metal slugs and stickbaits cast into feeding schools; work them fast on a medium spin outfit with 20–30 lb braid.

Strong tides and shallow reef mean boat positioning and timing are critical around Karratha. Plan sessions around tide changes when current slackens slightly, making it easier to hold over structure and present baits naturally. Use your sounder constantly to locate bait, isolated lumps and edges; once you find a consistent patch of fish, mark it and repeat drifts from the same angle to maximise your opportunities.

The Best Fishing Spots around Karratha

Hearson Cove

A sheltered Burrup Peninsula beach near Dampier, Hearson Cove is popular for walking baits and stickbaits for queenfish and trevally on the high tide, with whiting and flathead over the sand and the chance of threadfin salmon in warmer months; early morning and evening see the best surface activity, and neap tides make for comfortable wading and long casts along the cove’s edges.

Port Walcott

The broad embayment off Cape Lambert near Point Samson is renowned for pelagics and reef species—troll for mackerel and tuna along current lines, jig trevally on inshore lumps, and bait-fish for coral trout and emperor on structure; shore anglers pick up bream, queenfish and tailor from accessible rock and beach stretches, especially at dawn on the flooding tide.

Hampton Harbour

Dampier’s working harbour doubles as a productive fishing area, with rock walls and nearby channel edges holding trevally, queenfish, bream and squid, while boats push out to the inner reef line for trout, spangled emperor and seasonal Spanish mackerel; the cooler dry season brings clear water for lures, and neap tides make the harbour edges easier to fish.

Nickol Bay

Fronting Karratha, Nickol Bay’s sandbanks, channels and creek mouths fire for threadfin salmon, blue-nosed salmon, queenfish and trevally on moving tides, with whiting and flathead over the flats; boats work current lines and drop-offs with vibes and metals, while shore casters target the edges at dawn and dusk when baitfish push in tight.

Withnell Bay

Tucked on the Burrup Peninsula near Dampier, Withnell Bay’s clear water and reef edges attract squid, bream, tuskfish and trevally, with boats able to hop between shallow bommies for coral trout and spangled emperor; target the early dry-season for consistent visibility and work plastics or shallow divers along the fringing reef on the flood.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 9 beaches and bays in this area.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 2 main harbours in this area.
