Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Aberdeen
Aberdeen sits on a productive stretch of Scotland’s north‑east coast where the North Sea meets river estuaries and rocky headlands, creating varied fishing for cod, pollack, flatfish and summer mackerel. The key to consistent results around Aberdeen is matching rigs and tactics to the season and specific marks, particularly along Aberdeen Beach, the harbour area, and the rocky ground towards Footdee and south to Cove.
Winter and early spring are prime for cod and whiting. Heavy seas stir up the sand and rough ground off Aberdeen Beach and the rock marks south of the city, pushing fish inshore. Distance casting with clipped-down pulley rigs or simple paternosters carrying 4–6oz grip leads is effective. Fresh lugworm and black lug, tipped with squid or mackerel strip, are standout cod baits. Fish into the darker hours and on a flooding tide that coincides with rougher conditions for the best chance of larger cod and mixed whiting and coalfish bags.
From late spring into autumn, Aberdeen comes into its own for flatfish, pollack and mackerel. On calmer days, Aberdeen Beach and the River Don estuary give good returns of flounder, dab and the odd plaice. Use light beach gear or even a stronger spinning rod with two‑hook flapper rigs, size 1–2 hooks and small baits of ragworm, lugworm or mackerel strip. Long, flowing snoods and beads or sequins can draw more bites in clear water. For pollack and coalfish, target the rockier ground and structure around the harbour walls, breakwaters and the marks towards Cove, fishing soft plastic lures or float‑fished sandeels close to kelp beds and drop-offs.
Summer also brings shoals of mackerel tight to shore. Piers and harbour structures in the Aberdeen area are classic spots. A set of small silver or luminous feathers or Sabiki rigs, worked through mid-water, will fill a bag quickly when the fish are in. Downsize feathers and switch to single-hook lures or small metals when the water is very clear or the fish are picky. Early morning and late evening, especially on a rising tide, are peak times.
The River Dee and River Don systems and their estuaries add further options. Sea trout and occasional salmon move through, and flounders are widespread. Estuary flatties often respond well to light tackle: a 9–10ft spinning rod, small fixed spool reel and 10–12lb mainline, with running ledger rigs and minimal lead to let baits move naturally in the tide. Worm baits, crab and mackerel strip are consistent producers, and fan casting to cover channels and gutters increases your chances.
Boat anglers working out of Aberdeen can access deeper offshore ground for cod, ling, haddock and occasional spurdog and rays. Standard boat rigs such as flowing traces or one‑up, one‑down paternosters baited with mackerel, squid or worm perform well, while shads and pirks jigged near wrecks and rough ground account for better fish.
Tactically, Aberdeen rewards mobility and observation. Note where sand meets rock, look for surf tables along Aberdeen Beach, and time sessions around tide movement rather than clock time alone. Carry a mix of worm, fish and squid baits, plus a selection of lures, so you can change quickly if conditions or target species shift through the tide.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 16 beaches and bays in this area.
