Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Bournemouth
Bournemouth fishing focuses almost entirely on sea angling, with long sandy beaches, two main piers, and easy access to inshore and offshore boat fishing in the English Channel. The town sits between Poole Bay and Christchurch Bay, giving shore anglers plenty of options for targeting bass, rays, flatfish, and seasonal shoal fish like mackerel and garfish.
From late spring through early autumn, Bournemouth Pier and the surrounding beaches are at their most productive. Mackerel and garfish push close to the structure on the flooding tide, and a simple set of feather rigs or small silver spinners worked mid-water will usually find fish when shoals are present. Bass patrol the surf lines and the pier legs; dawn and dusk sessions using natural baits such as ragworm, lugworm, peeler crab, or whole sandeel on a running ledger rig are reliable producers. Light lure fishing with 20–30 g metal jigs or soft plastics along the pier edges is a mobile, effective tactic when water clarity is good.
In summer, the clean sand of Bournemouth’s main beach and the stretches toward Boscombe and Southbourne hold plaice, flounder, sole, rays, and occasional smoothhound. A 12–13 ft beachcaster paired with a fixed spool reel and 4–5 oz grip lead will comfortably hold bottom in typical surf. Use two-hook clipped-down rigs to present lugworm, ragworm, strips of squid, or crab baits at range. Thornback and small-eyed rays favour slightly deeper gutters and areas where the sand contours change; concentrate on these features at low tide then fish them as the tide floods back in.
Autumn is a changeover period when summer species overlap with winter visitors. Mackerel and garfish can still be present on calm, clear days, but whiting, pouting, and the first codling start appearing in coloured water and rougher conditions. Night fishing becomes particularly effective. Scale down to smaller hooks (size 2–1/0) and use two- or three-hook flapper rigs baited with small sections of mackerel, squid, or worm to build up a steady catch of whiting and pouting, with the chance of a better codling or ray picking up a larger bottom bait.
Through winter, Bournemouth’s open beaches offer consistent sport with whiting, pouting, dogfish, and the odd codling during onshore blows. Fish the forming and full tide, especially over darkness, and keep baits compact and fresh. Whiting respond well to cocktail baits such as worm tipped with mackerel or squid. When the sea eases after a gale, there is often a short window where codling move in tight to feed in the churned-up surf; heavier 5–6 oz leads and strong mono or braid leaders are useful in these conditions.
Boat fishing out of nearby Poole or Christchurch gives access to the broader Bournemouth bay area and offshore reefs. In spring and summer, charter boats target black bream, smoothhound, tope, and rays on reef edges and clean ground marks. Standard flowing traces with fluorocarbon hooklengths and baits such as squid, mackerel strip, or peeler crab account for most fish. Where wrecks are accessible off Bournemouth, ling, pollack, and conger eel can be taken on pirks, artificial shads, or large fish baits fished tight to the structure.
Whatever the season, success around Bournemouth hinges on reading the tides and water clarity, matching tackle to surf conditions, and adjusting bait size and presentation to the species you expect. Travel light on the piers, keep rigs streamlined for distance on the beaches, and use fresh, well-presented baits to make the most of this productive stretch of Dorset coastline.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 11 beaches and bays in this area.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 2 main harbours in this area.
