Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Winchester
Winchester fishing revolves around the legendary River Itchen, a classic Hampshire chalkstream flowing through and around the city. Crystal-clear water, rich weed growth and stable year-round flows create ideal habitat for trout and grayling, while slower, deeper sections and side channels hold a strong head of coarse fish and predators. Within a short drive are day-ticket stillwaters and commercial fisheries that broaden your species list and give reliable sport in all seasons.
Seasonal patterns on the Itchen and nearby venues are well defined. From early spring, hatches of olives and midges bring wild and stocked brown trout up to the surface; this is prime time for upstream dry-fly work with small, sparse patterns on light leaders. Late spring into early summer sees the most consistent sport, with evening rises ideal for emerger and spinner patterns. As water temperatures peak in mid-summer, trout push into faster, better-oxygenated runs; nymphs and upstream spiders become more reliable than dries in bright conditions.
Autumn around Winchester is dominated by grayling fishing. As the weed dies back and the water cools, grayling shoal up in deeper glides. Light nymphing with tungsten-beaded bugs, small PTNs and Czech-style patterns fished under a sensitive indicator is effective, especially on dull days. Through winter, when the river runs low and clear, scale down to fine tippet and tiny nymphs, or target perch, roach and chub in slack margins and deeper bends with maggots, worms and small jigs.
The Itchen’s habitat variety is the key to its mixed fishing. Fast, gravelly runs hold trout and grayling; look for broken water and weedbeds where fish sit on the crease lines. Slower, wider sections through the valley and near town bridges provide cover for chub, dace, roach and perch. Side channels, mill streams and backwaters are perfect ambush points for pike, especially in winter when silver fish shoal tightly. Nearby stillwaters around Winchester add carp, tench and bream to the list, with margins and islands the main holding areas.
Practical tactics depend on your target species:
- Trout & grayling (fly fishing): Use a 9–9.5 ft 4–5 wt rod, long leaders (12–15 ft) and fluorocarbon tippet. Approach from downstream, keep a low profile, and cast from well back to avoid spooking fish in the clear water.
- Coarse fish: Stick or waggler float tactics with small hooks and light lines work well in the town stretches and slower glides. Feed sparsely but regularly with maggots, casters or hemp to draw fish off the main flow.
- Pike & perch: Focus on marinas, locks, deep bends and overhanging trees. Lure fishing with small shads, spinners and jerkbaits covers water efficiently; in colder months, static deadbaits can draw larger pike.
- Stillwaters around Winchester: For carp and tench, method feeders, solid PVA bags and short hooklinks fished to features are consistent. On trout lakes, intermediate lines with small lures or buzzers produce takes throughout much of the year.
By matching your approach to the season, reading the chalkstream structure carefully and scaling down for the clear water, Winchester offers consistently productive fishing for both fly and coarse anglers across the year.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
