Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Annapolis
Annapolis fishing revolves around the Severn River, its tidal creeks, and quick access to the middle Chesapeake Bay. This brackish mix supports classic Chesapeake species like striped bass (locally "rockfish"), white perch, spot, and blue crabs, while nearby freshwater reaches and reservoirs hold bass, catfish, and panfish. Anglers can launch from public ramps, work shorelines near downtown, or run short boat rides to productive bay structure, making Annapolis an efficient hub for both casual and serious fishing.
Seasonal patterns drive most success. In early spring, yellow perch and white perch push into upper Severn River arms and feeder creeks, concentrating in deeper holes and channel bends. Small shad darts, 1–2 inch soft plastics, and bottom rigs with grass shrimp or bloodworms are effective. As water warms into late spring, rockfish become the primary target: fish stage along channel edges, bridge pilings, and points. Jigging metal spoons or soft plastics on 1/2–1 oz jigheads around structure is a consistent Annapolis tactic.
Through summer, many Annapolis anglers switch to live bait and chumming in the main bay. Anchor on channel edges or humps and deploy cut menhaden or soft crab for rockfish, with spot or bloodworms on light bottom rigs producing steady action from white perch, spot, and croaker. Early morning and evening topwater along shorelines, riprap, and the Navy seawall can be excellent for rockfish and schoolie bluefish—walk-the-dog plugs and small poppers shine in calm conditions.
Fall is typically the pinnacle of fishing around Annapolis. Cooling water draws in larger schools of baitfish, and rockfish, blues, and sometimes speckled trout key on them. Use binoculars and electronics to find working birds over breaking fish in the bay; metal jigs, 4–6 inch soft plastics, and small spoons cast into the feeds draw fast bites. Closer to town, white perch stack on deeper hard-bottom areas and bridge pilings; small dropper rigs with size 4–6 hooks tipped with bait or Gulp! baits are highly productive.
Winter action is slower but still possible. Rockfish hold deeper along bay channels and bridge spans; vertical jigging with heavier metals and 1–2 oz soft plastic jigs works when fish are marked on sonar. In the upper tidal reaches and nearby freshwater impoundments, channel and blue catfish, largemouth bass, and chain pickerel remain options; slow-rolled spinnerbaits, suspending jerkbaits, and cut bait on bottom rigs cover these colder months.
Key habitat types around Annapolis include:
- Bridge pilings and deep structure in the Severn River and bay
- Rocky points, riprap shorelines, and jetties near downtown and marinas
- Oyster reefs, shell bottom, and channel edges in the middle bay
- Tidal creeks with grass beds and laydowns for perch and juvenile rockfish
- Fresh to brackish upper river stretches for perch, catfish, and seasonal shad runs
For pragmatic success, match tackle to the target. Medium spinning outfits with 10–20 lb braided line and fluorocarbon leaders handle most rockfish, bluefish, and trout. Ultralight to light tackle with 6–10 lb line is ideal for perch, spot, and creek fishing. Keep a mix of metals, soft plastics, bottom rigs, and a topwater or two rigged at all times; Annapolis conditions shift quickly with tide and wind, and being able to switch from bottom fishing to jigging or casting in minutes is often the key to maximizing every tide window.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 4 beaches and bays in this area.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 11 main harbours in this area.
