Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Bay City
Bay City, Texas sits just inland from Matagorda Bay, putting anglers within easy reach of some of the most productive fishing on the middle Texas coast. The lower Colorado River, East and West Matagorda Bays, and a network of marshes and backlakes provide habitat for speckled trout, redfish, flounder, and a strong mix of freshwater species. Whether you’re wading shell reefs, drifting over scattered grass, or soaking bait from a riverbank, the Bay City area offers consistent, year‑round action.
In spring, warming water on Matagorda Bay triggers strong trout and redfish bites along shallow shorelines and mid‑bay shell. Focus on protected coves and drains near the Colorado River outflow when tides are moving. Soft plastics on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads, slow‑rolled along the bottom, and topwaters at first light are proven producers. In the river, rising flows often push channel and blue catfish into deeper bends and below current breaks; cut shad or shrimp on simple bottom rigs will draw steady bites.
Summer fishing around Bay City is all about early and late windows. Speckled trout push onto shallow grass and sand during low‑light periods, then slide to deeper shell and dropoffs as the sun climbs. Drift‑fishing with live shrimp or croaker under a popping cork is a staple tactic; vary leader length to keep baits just above the shell. Redfish roam shorelines, marsh drains, and shallow lakes—sight‑casting gold spoons or paddle‑tail plastics to wakes and pushes is highly effective. Offshore‑oriented species like Spanish mackerel and jack crevalle sometimes run into the surf and near jetties closer to the Gulf side of Matagorda.
Fall is often the peak season. Cooling water consolidates baitfish in bayou mouths, guts, and along windblown shorelines, drawing in trout, redfish, and flounder. Work leeward shorelines on strong wind days and key on visible bait activity. Flounder stack near passes, channels, and sandy edges—slowly hop soft plastics or mud minnows along bottom, keeping contact with the substrate. In the freshwater reaches near Bay City, white bass and hybrid stripers chase shad in main‑river channels and below low‑head structures; vertical jigging spoons or casting small swimbaits around schooling activity pays off.
Winter fishing can be excellent if you adjust locations and speed. Speckled trout and redfish hold over deeper shell, channels, and mud flats adjacent to deeper water, especially on sunny days that warm the mud. Fish soft plastics and suspending hard baits with long pauses and subtle twitches. The Colorado River stays relatively stable and produces quality blue and flathead catfish in deeper holes—use heavier tackle, large live or cut bait, and be patient. Largemouth bass and crappie concentrate around slower, deeper cover; downsized jigs and finesse plastics excel when the water is cold and clear.
Access around Bay City includes public boat ramps on the Colorado River and multiple launch points leading into East and West Matagorda Bays. For wade anglers, focus on firm sand and shell shorelines and always shuffle your feet in potential stingray water. Wind and tide direction strongly shape the bite: fish windward banks when bait is being blown in, and prioritize moving water around drains, cuts, and channel edges. Simplify your approach with a few proven lures—soft plastic paddletails, topwaters, gold spoons, and jigging spoons—and adjust color and size to water clarity. Staying mobile, reading bait and bird activity, and matching your presentation to seasonal patterns are the keys to consistent fishing success around Bay City and Matagorda Bay.
