Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

October Fishing Report
October brings a strong transition bite around Chesapeake Ranch Estates as water temps drop. Look for schooled striped bass blitzing peanut bunker at first light along points and rips near Cove Point and the mouth of the Patuxent. Cast small metal jigs, 3–5 inch soft plastics on 1/2 oz heads, or work topwater early when birds are active.
Speckled trout and puppy drum prowl grass edges and riprap on moving tides; shrimp-pattern soft plastics and light jigheads in 3–6 feet produce. Roaming bluefish slash through bait on breezy afternoons—metal spoons and fast retrieves draw strikes. In quieter coves, white perch school over shell and hard bottom; try bottom rigs with bloodworms or small spinner jigs.
Best action typically lines up with dawn/dusk and strong tide changes. After a cold front, expect fish to hold a bit deeper on leeward shorelines; on stable, sunny days they slide shallow to feed. Water clarity improves on north winds—go natural colors; switch to brighter profiles when the bay gets stained.
Top tip: Keep a rod rigged with a small metal jig; when birds suddenly pin bait, you can bomb long casts and match the hatch instantly.
