Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:57 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Olympia

Fishing in Olympia, WA revolves around the protected waters of South Puget Sound and a network of productive freshwater lakes and rivers. Budd Inlet sits at the city’s doorstep, giving shore, kayak, and small-boat anglers direct access to salmon, bottomfish, and crabbing, while nearby lakes like Black Lake, Long Lake, and Summit Lake provide consistent trout and warmwater action.

Seasonally, Olympia’s saltwater game is driven by salmon and migratory baitfish. Summer into early fall is prime for Chinook and coho in Budd Inlet and the lower Sound. Trollers run small flashers with hoochies or spoons along current seams and contour breaks, focusing on first light and tide changes. Bank anglers do well casting weighted spoons and twitching jigs from public shorelines, especially when coho push shallow. Late fall brings chum close to shore; downsize to jigs and keep a steady, medium retrieve to stay in the strike zone.

Year-round saltwater structure fishing targets rockfish, lingcod, and flounder around rocky points, riprap, and man-made structure. Light to medium spinning tackle with 10–20 lb braid and a fluorocarbon leader handles most situations. Drop-shot style setups with strips of bait, soft plastic grubs, or metal jigs work vertically over rock piles and steep drops. Watch your sonar or use a weighted marker line to stay just off the bottom and avoid constant snagging.

Freshwater around Olympia offers a different toolkit. Black Lake and Long Lake are reliable for largemouth bass, panfish, and stocked trout. In early spring, focus on north-facing coves that warm first; slow-roll spinnerbaits, suspending jerkbaits, and weightless stickbaits around dock pilings, downed trees, and emergent weeds. As water temperatures climb into summer, shift to early-morning and evening topwater with frogs and poppers tight to cover, then fish deeper weed edges and drop-offs with Texas-rigged plastics or jigs as the sun gets high.

Trout anglers score consistently by trolling small spoons, wedding rings, or spinner-and-worm combos 10–25 feet down over the main lake basins, especially in Summit Lake and other nearby trout waters. When fish are shallow in spring, a slow troll with no weight or a small split shot is often enough; as the season progresses, add a small dodger or use leaded line to reach deeper fish. From shore, still-fishing with slip bobbers and floating dough baits, or casting 1/8–1/4 oz spinners along points and drop-offs, covers water efficiently.

Light-gear panfishing can be excellent throughout summer in Olympia’s lakes. Use ultra-light spinning tackle, 4–6 lb line, and tiny hooks with pieces of worm or small soft plastics under a fixed bobber around docks and over submerged brush. When schools are found, note the depth and duplicate that presentation along similar structure for fast action with bluegill, pumpkinseed, perch, and crappie.

Across all of Olympia’s fisheries, timing and tide or light conditions matter as much as location. Plan saltwater trips around tide changes, fish low-light windows in clear lakes, and keep presentations subtle when the water is calm and bright. Downsizing line, using natural colors in clear water and brighter patterns in low visibility, and paying attention to birds and bait on the surface will consistently improve catch rates around Olympia.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 3 beaches and bays in this area.
