Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 9:59 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Wollongong

Wollongong fishing is built around a rugged coastline, surf beaches and nearshore reefs that hold fish year-round. Local hotspots include the rock ledges around Flagstaff Hill, the beaches from North Wollongong through Fairy Meadow and Towradgi, and the inshore reefs off Port Kembla and Five Islands. Whether you’re fishing land-based or from a trailer boat, most productive sessions come from matching your approach to the season, tide and structure.

In summer, early mornings and late afternoons are prime for surface action. Kingfish, salmon and bonito patrol the headlands and islands; metal slugs (20–60 g), stickbaits and live baits (slimy mackerel, yellowtail) are the main producers. Work bait schools and current lines off the Five Islands and deeper bommies, keeping lures in the top third of the water column. On the beaches, whiting and bream feed in the shallow gutters on a rising tide; use light 6–10 lb leaders, size 4–6 long-shank hooks and live worms or pipis for consistent results.

Autumn is a reliable time for snapper and inshore pelagics. Fish the reef edges in 15–40 m with lightly weighted pilchards, squid strips or soft plastics (4–7 inch jerk shads in natural colours). Drift-fishing over patchy reef and rubble produces mixed bags of snapper, morwong, trevally and flathead. On calm evenings, mulloway patrol the beach gutters and breakwall areas — focus around tide changes and after a blow when the water is stirred but starting to clear.

During winter, tailor, salmon and trevally become more prominent along the surf zone and rock platforms. Spin 30–40 g metals at dawn and dusk, or fish whole pilchards on ganged hooks in the deeper gutters. Luderick fishing peaks along the rock walls, harbours and kelp-lined ledges; use green weed or cabbage on light float rigs, and berley steadily to hold the school. Offshore, deeper drifts over sand in 40–70 m produce quality tiger and sand flathead — keep rigs simple with paternosters, 5/0–6/0 hooks and fresh strip baits.

In spring, baitfish push back in tight to the coast and mixed bags are common. Squid are a key target and an excellent bait source; look for reef patches, kelp beds and ribbon weed in 5–15 m, working 2.5–3.0 size jigs in natural and pink patterns. Once you secure fresh squid, use strips or heads on livebait-style rigs around reef edges for snapper and early-season kingfish.

Success around Wollongong hinges on reading structure and conditions. Beaches fish best where you can see defined gutters, deeper holes and side washes; avoid long featureless stretches. On the rocks, concentrate on wash zones, ledge corners and areas where deep water comes close to shore. For boats, keep an eye on sounder readings for bait schools stacked on the up-current side of reefs and anchor or drift to keep baits moving naturally through that zone.

Light, balanced tackle dramatically increases bites in Wollongong’s often-clear water. For estuary and light coastal work, a 2–4 kg spin outfit with 6–10 lb braid and 8–12 lb leader is ideal; for rock and offshore reef fishing, step up to 15–30 lb braid with 20–40 lb leader. Always carry a selection of sinker sizes to adjust for swell and current, keeping your presentation just heavy enough to hold the strike zone rather than anchoring on the bottom.

Lake Illawarra

A large coastal lake connected to the sea that shines for summertime whiting on the flats, year‑round flathead and bream in channels, and night‑time mulloway around deeper holes; kayaks and tinnies drift weed beds for squid near the entrance, with easy shore access around Warilla and Windang.

Windang Beach

An ocean beach at the lake entrance known for reliable gutters producing salmon, tailor and bream, with summer whiting on worms and pipis and flathead in the corners; the nearby rocks and the channel towards Windang Island add options for luderick and squid on clear, calm days.
