Fishing Overview Kalamunda

Fishing around Kalamunda, Western Australia centres on quick access to the Perth Hills dams as well as the Swan River and Indian Ocean coastline. Base yourself in Kalamunda and you can be casting for redfin perch in the Darling Range at first light, then soaking baits for bream or tailor in the Swan by late afternoon. The key to consistent results here is matching your tactics to the distinct freshwater and saltwater options within a 30–60 minute drive.

In the hills, anglers focus on stocked trout and abundant redfin perch in the larger water supply dams and smaller forest reservoirs. Autumn and winter are peak times for trout, with cool, clear water pushing fish into the shallows around flooded timber, rocky points and inflowing creeks. Work shallow-running hardbodies, 7–10 g metal spoons or small soft plastics along wind-blown banks, and keep moving until you find active fish. For redfin perch, slow-rolling 2–3 inch paddle-tail plastics close to the bottom around submerged trees, old fence lines and steep drop-offs is consistently productive.

Spring brings rising water levels and a strong edge bite. Walk the margins flicking small spinnerbaits, vibes or lightly weighted plastics along the weed edges and any visible structure. Early and late in the day, lightly weighted scrub worms or garden worms under a float produce steady action on both trout and redfin for bait fishers. At night, anglers also target marron in permitted seasons in some hills waters; work rocky banks and submerged logs with simple drop nets or snare-style gear, focusing on quiet, low-light conditions.

Dropping off the escarpment towards the coastal plain, the Swan and Canning systems offer year-round estuary fishing. From Kalamunda, the mid-to-upper Swan is within easy reach and holds southern black bream, flathead, mulloway and tailor. In the cooler months, bream congregate around deep rock walls, bridge pylons and marina structure. Fish lightly weighted baits such as river prawns or hardy live baits close to the bottom, or hop 2–3 inch grubs and shrimp-profile plastics down the face of structure, pausing often to draw timid bites.

Summer and early autumn are prime for whiting, herring and tailor along the open beaches and groynes to the west of Kalamunda. For boat anglers launching from Perth metro ramps, the nearshore and offshore grounds hold pink snapper, dhufish, Samsonfish, baldchin groper and squid. Inshore broken ground and weed beds in 5–15 m fish well for squid and sand whiting; drift with the breeze, casting egi jigs for squid and bouncing small baits on the sand patches for whiting. Deeper reefs and lumps wider out respond to a mix of slow-pitch jigs, soft plastics and lightly weighted baits, especially around dawn, dusk and tide changes.

Throughout the Kalamunda region, success hinges on reading the prevailing conditions. In the hills dams, focus on windward shores, subtle temperature changes and any visible baitfish or insect activity. On the estuary and coast, pay attention to tide movement, swell size and water clarity, adjusting sinker weight and leader thickness accordingly. Keep your gear versatile – a light 2–4 kg spin setup for the dams and estuary plus a 6–10 kg surf or boat outfit for the coast will cover most fishing scenarios within striking distance of Kalamunda.

The Best Fishing Spots around Kalamunda

Woodman Point

The long point and rock platforms offer reliable tailor, herring, and seasonal salmon, plus squid and snook in clear water; baitfish schools often push in close drawing bonito and small tunas, while small boats work the surrounding reef line towards Owen Anchorage.

Hillarys Boat Harbour

The outer rock walls and marina mouths yield herring, tailor, skippy, and prolific squid on calm evenings; inside the harbour is sheltered for families, while boats troll and cast around the outer reefs towards Sorrento and Marmion for pelagics in summer.

Cottesloe Beach

Around the reefy gutters and groynes, Cottesloe turns on tailor at dawn and dusk, steady herring and whiting along the sand, and occasional autumn salmon; calm, clear nights can see squid and snook patrolling the weed edges stretching towards Swanbourne.

Trigg Beach

A surf beach with reef and sand patches, Trigg fires for tailor in the washes, late-summer herring, and the west coast salmon run when swell and bait align; metal lures and pilchard ganged rigs shine, with similar terrain continuing north to Scarborough and south to North Beach.

Swan River

The metro estuary holds year-round black bream, summer flathead and whiting on the flats, plus tailor and occasional mulloway; work the banks and structure from Guildford through Claremont to Fremantle, with lures and baits effective from shore and small boats.

Canning River

A quieter arm of the estuary that fishes well for black bream tight to snags, summer flathead and whiting on the edges, and roaming tailor; popular stretches include Mount Henry to Shelley and up past Riverton, accessible by kayak or from numerous parks and paths.

Mosman Bay

A deep, sheltered bend of the Swan with moorings and eddies that hold quality black bream, dusk tailor, and occasional mulloway; fish the drop-offs and boat hull shadows, with flats action for whiting towards Freshwater Bay and the channel towards Claremont.
