Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 16:6 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Winnipeg

Winnipeg fishing revolves around the Red and Assiniboine Rivers and quick access to Lake Winnipeg and its tributaries. The city is uniquely positioned: anglers can target trophy channel catfish from downtown shorelines, chase walleye and sauger at river mouths, or head north toward Selkirk and Lake Winnipeg for big-water action. With open-water and ice-fishing opportunities, it’s a true four-season fishery.

Spring in Winnipeg is dominated by rising water and pre-spawn movements. As ice leaves the rivers, channel catfish, walleye, sauger, and pike slide into current seams and back eddies where water warms quickly. Shore anglers do well near bridge abutments, outflows, and the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine using bottom rigs with bait for cats and jigs tipped with soft plastics for walleye. In stained water, favor bright chartreuse, orange, and glow patterns, and keep presentations slow and close to bottom.

Summer brings stable flows and some of the best channel catfish fishing on the continent. Focus on deeper outside bends, mid-river humps, and the heads and tails of holes in the Red River. A classic setup is a medium-heavy to heavy rod with 40–65 lb braid, sliding sinker rig, and fresh cut bait anchored just downstream of structure. Anchor slightly above the target spot so baits rest in the seam where cats travel. For walleye and sauger in summer, troll crankbaits along current breaks or vertically jig in slower holes, paying close attention to subtle depth changes of 1–3 feet.

Lake Winnipeg, a short drive north, provides big-water opportunities for walleye, sauger, and white bass. In open water, wind-driven shorelines and river mouths concentrate fish. Drift or troll over expansive flats using bottom-bouncers with spinner rigs, or long-line crankbaits tuned to run just off bottom. On calm days, use your electronics to identify small rock patches or depressions—isolated structure often holds oversized fish in an otherwise featureless basin.

Fall is prime time for trophy walleye and aggressive pike. Cooling water pushes baitfish into river channels and along drop-offs. Cast jigs and lipless crankbaits along the Red River’s edges, or slow-troll larger crankbaits as daylight shortens. Fish often stack on the upstream side of points and at the mouths of smaller creeks entering the main river. Catfish remain catchable until water temperatures drop sharply; scale down weights as flows decrease and present baits more subtly.

Winter transforms Winnipeg into an ice-fishing hub. The lower Red River and south basin of Lake Winnipeg are renowned for greenback walleye and jumbo perch. Use a combination of a deadstick rod with a live minnow and an actively worked spoon or rattle bait. Hole hopping is critical—give each hole 10–15 minutes, then move until you contact roaming schools. On the Red within reach of the city, set lines along channel edges and sharp breaks; even small transitions in depth can mark well-used travel corridors under the ice.

Across all seasons, current is the key variable in Winnipeg’s fisheries. Read the river: target edges of fast water, inside turns with slower flow, and spots where current breaks around rocks, wood, and man-made structure. Use heavier weights and larger profiles when the river is high and dirty, and downsize as levels drop and clarity improves. With attention to seasonal shifts and current dynamics, Winnipeg offers consistent action and realistic shots at true trophy fish only minutes from the urban core.

The Best Fishing Spots around Winnipeg

The Forks

At the confluence of the Red River and Assiniboine River in downtown Winnipeg, The Forks provides convenient urban shoreline access to goldeye, freshwater drum, channel catfish, and seasonal walleye, with current breaks around the junction producing best; it’s a classic quick-session spot, and many anglers also explore up- or downstream reaches toward St. Vital or St. Boniface.

Winnipeg Beach

Southwest shore of Lake Winnipeg with easy access for surf casting and small-craft launching; fall brings surf-caught greenback walleye along the beach and nearby piers, while summer produces pike and perch on adjacent flats; in winter, the broad, relatively shallow basin becomes a popular ice zone, with many anglers also roaming to Gimli Harbour or Matlock.

Balsam Bay

On Lake Winnipeg’s southeastern corner, Balsam Bay is famous for migratory greenback walleye each fall, with boats and waders working wind-driven shorelines and nearby points; winter brings consistent ice bites for walleye and perch, and anglers often hop between here and Warner Road or Grand Marais depending on pressure and ice conditions.

Assiniboine River

Flowing through Winnipeg, the Assiniboine offers urban access to goldeye, walleye, channel catfish, and freshwater drum, with productive current breaks near bridges, park shorelines, and inside bends; early summer sees mixed-species action, and fall can produce strong walleye runs near the confluence with the Red River at The Forks.

Red River

The Red River through and north of Winnipeg is renowned for trophy channel catfish in late spring and summer, plus greenback walleye, sauger, and goldeye; shore anglers work parks and promenades while boats target current seams, holes, and eddies, with popular stretches including Lockport, Selkirk Park, and reaches around St. Norbert.

Seine River

A meandering tributary running through southeast Winnipeg, the Seine provides accessible, small-water opportunities for northern pike, goldeye, and seasonal walleye in deeper pools and undercut banks; it’s a quiet alternative to the main rivers, with anglers often pairing it with nearby stretches of the Red River or Assiniboine River.

Sturgeon Creek

This west-side Winnipeg creek feeds the Assiniboine and offers intimate fishing for northern pike, goldeye, and occasional walleye, especially in spring and fall when fish move between the creek and the main river; access points near parks and crossings make it a convenient urban option alongside Assiniboine River hotspots.
