Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Winnipeg
Winnipeg fishing revolves around the Red and Assiniboine Rivers and quick access to Lake Winnipeg and its tributaries. The city is uniquely positioned: anglers can target trophy channel catfish from downtown shorelines, chase walleye and sauger at river mouths, or head north toward Selkirk and Lake Winnipeg for big-water action. With open-water and ice-fishing opportunities, it’s a true four-season fishery.
Spring in Winnipeg is dominated by rising water and pre-spawn movements. As ice leaves the rivers, channel catfish, walleye, sauger, and pike slide into current seams and back eddies where water warms quickly. Shore anglers do well near bridge abutments, outflows, and the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine using bottom rigs with bait for cats and jigs tipped with soft plastics for walleye. In stained water, favor bright chartreuse, orange, and glow patterns, and keep presentations slow and close to bottom.
Summer brings stable flows and some of the best channel catfish fishing on the continent. Focus on deeper outside bends, mid-river humps, and the heads and tails of holes in the Red River. A classic setup is a medium-heavy to heavy rod with 40–65 lb braid, sliding sinker rig, and fresh cut bait anchored just downstream of structure. Anchor slightly above the target spot so baits rest in the seam where cats travel. For walleye and sauger in summer, troll crankbaits along current breaks or vertically jig in slower holes, paying close attention to subtle depth changes of 1–3 feet.
Lake Winnipeg, a short drive north, provides big-water opportunities for walleye, sauger, and white bass. In open water, wind-driven shorelines and river mouths concentrate fish. Drift or troll over expansive flats using bottom-bouncers with spinner rigs, or long-line crankbaits tuned to run just off bottom. On calm days, use your electronics to identify small rock patches or depressions—isolated structure often holds oversized fish in an otherwise featureless basin.
Fall is prime time for trophy walleye and aggressive pike. Cooling water pushes baitfish into river channels and along drop-offs. Cast jigs and lipless crankbaits along the Red River’s edges, or slow-troll larger crankbaits as daylight shortens. Fish often stack on the upstream side of points and at the mouths of smaller creeks entering the main river. Catfish remain catchable until water temperatures drop sharply; scale down weights as flows decrease and present baits more subtly.
Winter transforms Winnipeg into an ice-fishing hub. The lower Red River and south basin of Lake Winnipeg are renowned for greenback walleye and jumbo perch. Use a combination of a deadstick rod with a live minnow and an actively worked spoon or rattle bait. Hole hopping is critical—give each hole 10–15 minutes, then move until you contact roaming schools. On the Red within reach of the city, set lines along channel edges and sharp breaks; even small transitions in depth can mark well-used travel corridors under the ice.
Across all seasons, current is the key variable in Winnipeg’s fisheries. Read the river: target edges of fast water, inside turns with slower flow, and spots where current breaks around rocks, wood, and man-made structure. Use heavier weights and larger profiles when the river is high and dirty, and downsize as levels drop and clarity improves. With attention to seasonal shifts and current dynamics, Winnipeg offers consistent action and realistic shots at true trophy fish only minutes from the urban core.
