Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:28 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Ottawa

Fishing in Ottawa revolves around three main systems: the Ottawa River, the Rideau River and Canal, and nearby lakes like Mississippi Lake and the Rideau Lakes chain. The Ottawa River is the headline water for muskellunge, walleye, and smallmouth bass, with a mix of rocky shorelines, deep channels, and weedy bays. The Rideau offers more moderate flows, abundant vegetation, and great shore access right in the city, while surrounding lakes give Ottawa anglers options when wind or water levels are challenging on the big river.

Seasonal patterns are key around Ottawa. In spring, as soon as the water warms, pike and panfish stack up in shallow bays, flooded shorelines, and creek mouths. Small inline spinners, suspending jerkbaits, and simple jig-and-minnow presentations shine for pike and walleye, while tiny plastics under a float produce steady perch and crappie action. By early summer, smallmouth bass move to rocky points, mid-depth shoals, and current breaks along both the Ottawa and Rideau rivers. Topwaters at dawn and dusk, tubes, and ned rigs work well around rock and rubble.

Through summer, largemouth bass concentrate in weedy bays, docks, and marinas. In Ottawa’s heavily pressured water, downsizing line and lures makes a difference: finesse worms, weightless stickbaits, and compact jigs pick off bites where loud power presentations stall. Walleye spread along channel edges, wing dams, and deep flats on the Ottawa River. Trolling crankbaits that tick bottom or drifting a jig-and-crawler along the current seam are consistent techniques, especially early and late in the day.

Fall is big-fish time in Ottawa. Cooling water pushes baitfish onto points, steep breaks, and the first deep edges off shallow flats. Smallmouth bass feed aggressively on jerkbaits and swimbaits worked along rock transitions. The Ottawa River’s muskellunge fishing peaks in this period; large casting jerkbaits, rubber bulldawgs, and big trolling plugs run along weed edges and channel drops are standard tactics. Focus on areas where current sweeps past structure—points, islands, and narrows often hold both bait and predators.

Ice fishing is a major part of the Ottawa angling calendar. Once safe ice forms, sheltered sections of the Ottawa River, the Rideau system, and nearby lakes offer good action for walleye, perch, and pike. Tip-ups rigged with live or dead bait set along weed edges and breaks target pike, while walleye respond to rattling spoons and small jigging minnows worked close to bottom at low-light periods. Panfish often hold in 8–15 feet around remaining weeds; small tungsten jigs tipped with micro plastics draw steady bites.

From shore, Ottawa anglers do well by targeting bridges, parks, and public access points along the rivers. Focus on current breaks, eddies below dams, and any visible structure. Light to medium spinning gear, a selection of 1/8–1/2 oz jigs, a few crankbaits, and soft plastics will cover most situations. A compact tackle kit and mobile approach—making frequent moves until you contact fish—is one of the most reliable strategies for consistent fishing success in and around Ottawa.

The Best Fishing Spots around Ottawa

Bate Island

Sitting beneath the Champlain Bridge on the Ottawa River, Bate Island is a classic multi-species hotspot where anglers target muskellunge, walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and spring channel catfish; fast current seams and eddies draw fish most of the open-water season, with prime action from late spring through fall. It’s a go-to urban shore spot with ample room, and also a launch point for boats exploring nearby Deschenes Rapids and Britannia Bay.

Petrie Island

On the lower Ottawa River in Orleans, Petrie Island offers diverse structure—weedbeds, drop-offs, and sandy flats—supporting pike, walleye, smallmouth bass, perch, crappie, and summer carp; spring and early summer are especially productive as fish stage around the marshes and channels. Shore anglers work the causeways and beaches while boats probe the deeper edges and the channel toward Lac Deschenes.

Britannia Bay

A protected bay on the Ottawa River, Britannia Bay is famed for accessible shore and kayak fishing for smallmouth bass, walleye, pike, and panfish; warming water in late spring draws bait and predators, with evening bites strong through summer. Launch from nearby ramps and work windblown points, or walk the rocky shoreline toward Andrew Haydon Park and Lac Deschenes.

Mooney's Bay

On the Rideau River, Mooney's Bay is an easy-access urban fishery with smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, pike, and abundant sunfish and perch; weedgrowth peaks mid-summer, creating ambush lanes along the drop into the main channel. Shorelines, docks, and the beach-adjacent edges produce, while small craft excel probing the weedlines toward Hog's Back.

Dow's Lake

This widening of the Rideau Canal is a summer favorite for easy-going action on panfish (bluegill, perch, crappie), with chances at pike and bass around weedbeds and docks; the bite is consistent from late spring through early fall. Rent a small boat or fish from accessible shore spots, and explore connecting waters toward Rideau Canal and Dow's Lake Pavilion.

Shirley's Bay

A classic stretch on the Ottawa River, Shirley's Bay offers expansive flats, rocky points, and drop-offs that hold smallmouth bass, walleye, pike, and seasonal perch; late spring and early summer shine before vegetation tops out. Shorelines, the boat launch area, and offshore humps are prime, with easy runs to Lac Deschenes structure.

Lac Deschenes

The broad lake-like reach of the Ottawa River known as Lac Deschenes is a regional draw for smallmouth bass, walleye, pike, and trophy muskellunge; wind-driven structure and shoals produce from late spring through fall. Launch from Britannia, Shirley's Bay, or Aylmer and work points, reefs, and current edges.

Billings Bridge

A well-known urban shore spot on the Rideau River, Billings Bridge gives quick access to current breaks and pools holding smallmouth bass, walleye, and carp; summer evenings and shoulder seasons can be especially productive. Anglers work both banks and adjacent paths, with additional water to explore toward Rideau Falls and Mooney's Bay.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 5 beaches and bays in this area.
