Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Dudley
Fishing in Dudley revolves around its network of canals and a good spread of small stillwaters, giving local anglers plenty of options without travelling far. The Dudley No.2 Canal, Stourbridge Canal arms and the nearby Netherton Tunnel Branch offer classic Black Country canal fishing with mixed bags of roach, skimmers, perch and the chance of bonus carp, pike and zander. Local pools such as Fens Pool, Bumble Hole and various club- or day-ticket fisheries hold larger carp, tench and bream for more relaxed session angling.
Seasonally, the canals around Dudley fish best from late spring through autumn. In April and May, concentrate on bread punch or pinkies over a light groundbait mix for roach and skimmers, starting down the track and roaming to far-bank features once fish show. Summer brings stronger pole and waggler sport, with hemp and tares or caster for better roach, and chopped worm and caster for perch around boat channels, moored craft and reed beds. Through winter, scale down to fine hooklengths, tiny hooks and single maggots, targeting the far shelf and deeper bends where fish shoal tightly.
On the canals, a 4–6 m pole covers most work, but a longer pole helps reach tight far-bank cover. Feed sparingly at first: a few grains of hemp and a pinch of maggots every put-in will keep bites coming without overfeeding in these pressured waters. For bonus carp and bream, set up a small method feeder or cage feeder to the far shelf with micro pellets and a wafter or corn on the hook. Early morning and late evening are prime times, especially around marina mouths, junctions and any inflowing streams.
Dudley’s park pools and commercial-style fisheries generally hold a mix of carp, F1s, tench, bream and roach. In warmer months, margin fishing is a top tactic: loosefeed 6 mm pellets or corn tight to reeds or rushes, then fish a short pole rig or light method feeder over the top. On deeper lakes, start on a short pole or bomb and pellet line for carp, switching to a shallow slapping or mugging approach if fish cruise high in the water. Tench and bream respond well to sweet groundbait with dead maggots and a worm or corn hookbait fished just over-depth.
Predator anglers on the Dudley canals can find pike and zander along the boat channels and near locks and bridges. Small deadbaits such as roach or smelt, fished on a simple float paternoster, work well in the colder months. Lure anglers should travel light with compact jig heads, shads and small crankbaits, systematically covering features such as overhanging trees, moorings and drop-offs.
Whatever venue you choose, travel with minimal gear and stay mobile. Rotate a few lines, keep feed measured and watch for signs such as topping silver fish, bubbling tench or swirling predators. Dudley’s canals and pools reward anglers who read the water, adjust rigs subtly and build their swims steadily rather than chasing instant action.
