Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Grimsby
Grimsby sea fishing revolves around the Humber Estuary and the adjacent North Sea coastline, giving shore and boat anglers a mix of shallow estuary channels, sand banks and rougher inshore ground. The tidal range is big here, so reading the tides and timing sessions carefully is more important than fancy tackle.
Seasonal patterns are well defined. From late autumn through winter, cod and whiting dominate, with the best runs often after North Sea blows that colour the water. Fish the flood and first of the ebb into the deeper water, especially at night, with big worm and squid cocktails. Spring sees increasing numbers of flounder and dab in the estuary, plus early bass nosing along the banks and gutters. Summer brings smoothhounds, thornback rays, dogfish and school bass, along with mackerel and the odd garfish on calm, clear days. As the first autumn gales arrive, bass and rays peak briefly before the cycle swings back to cod and whiting.
Key habitats around Grimsby include the Humber channel edges, sand and mud flats, and patches of broken ground. The estuary margins and docks area offer access to deeper, tide-swept water close in, ideal for winter codling and whiting. The Cleethorpes side gives more classic open-beach fishing with gulley systems and sandbars that hold flatfish and bass. Rougher patches, rock armour and man‑made structures hold wrasse, pollack and conger, particularly in summer.
Shore tactics centre on medium to heavy beach gear because of the strong tides. A 12–13 ft beachcaster paired with a 6500‑size multiplier or robust fixed spool and 15–18 lb mainline with a shockleader is a solid starting point. In stronger tide, use simple pulley rigs or 1‑up, 1‑down paternosters with 5–6 oz grip leads to hold bottom. In slacker neap tides, 2‑ or 3‑hook flappers with smaller hooks are effective for flatties and whiting. Cast just beyond the main surf line or into visible channels rather than simply aiming for maximum distance.
Bait choice is crucial in the Humber area. Lugworm and ragworm are staple offerings, either straight or tipped with squid, mackerel or bluey for cod and whiting. Peeler crab is a prime summer bait for bass and smoothhound, fished in the gutters and along channel edges on the flooding tide. For rays and larger huss or conger, use bigger fish baits such as mackerel, herring or squid sections presented on strong hooks and wire or heavy mono traces. Keep baits streamlined to cut drag in the heavy tide run.
Boat and charter fishing out of Grimsby taps into deeper wrecks and inshore sand banks. Wreck trips produce cod, pollack and ling on pirks, shads and baited hokais, while inshore drifts across banks and hollows yield rays, dabs, gurnard and smoothhound. Use 12–20 lb class boat rods for general work and step up a class when targeting bigger wreck fish or conger. Fishing downtide with flowing traces and long snoods often out‑catches shorter, stiff rigs here.
To get the best from Grimsby fishing, plan around the tide tables, favouring the middle hours of the flood and the first of the ebb, and adjust lead weight and rig style to keep baits anchored and working naturally. Vary casting distances to locate fish-holding channels, and be prepared to move a few metres along the beach or wall to follow features as the tide floods and ebbs.
