Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Leeds
Leeds fishing revolves around three main habitat types: the River Aire/Calder system, the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, and a dense ring of commercial stillwaters and club lakes on the city fringes. Each fishes differently through the seasons, so matching tactics to venue and conditions is crucial for consistent catches.
On the River Aire around Leeds (Kirkstall, Calverley, Thwaites Mill and downstream), the headline species is barbel, with plenty of back‑up chub, dace and roach. Barbel respond best from late spring through autumn when the water is warm and carrying a touch of colour. Target crease lines below weirs, the tails of deeper runs and any undercut banks. Use running rigs with 2–3oz leads, strong line (10–12lb) and baits like halibut pellets, luncheon meat or boilies. In low, clear summer water, scale down to smaller pellets, longer hooklengths and fish into dusk or after dark when the barbel patrol more confidently.
For all‑round river sport, trotting maggots or casters with a stick float takes roach, dace, chublets and the odd grayling on clean gravel runs. In winter, the Aire and Calder can still produce if you focus on slower, deeper bends and inside lines. Groundbait feeder with bread, pinkies or finely chopped worm will pick off silver fish when barbel are less active; keep feed tight and minimal in cold clear conditions.
The Leeds & Liverpool Canal through the city and out toward Rodley and Apperley Bridge offers classic canal fishing with roach, skimmers, perch and bonus pike. This canal rewards precision: plumbing the depth carefully and fishing dead depth or just overdepth on a pole rig with fine lines and small hooks is usually best. Pinkies, squatts and single maggot score for bites all year; add small balls of dark groundbait to hold fish in winter, and loose‑feed hemp and caster when the water warms. Perch cluster around features such as moored boats, bridges and marinas; small worms or prawn baits fished tight to these spots can produce better stamp fish.
Around the outskirts of Leeds, numerous commercial carp and mixed fisheries provide reliable action. Typical venues feature islands, aerators, corner margins and open bowls. In spring, target the shallower arms and shelves where carp and F1s move first; pellets on the pole, method feeder with wafters, and small hybrid feeders all work well. As summer develops, margin fishing with corn, meat or paste late in the day can out‑catch the open water lines. Feed micros or 4mm pellets little and often, watching for liners and swirls to gauge how high the fish are in the water column.
For specimen carp and pike on larger stillwaters and reservoirs around Leeds, location is everything. Windward banks, points and any visible snags consistently hold carp; spread a light boilie or pellet approach over a wide area to encourage confident feeding rather than piling bait in one tight spot. For pike, concentrate on drop‑offs, inlets and areas where silver fish shoal. Deadbaits (smelt, herring, roach) presented on simple float rigs are effective in the colder months, while lures and soft plastics excel in autumn when pike are actively hunting.
Across all Leeds venues, success hinges on observation and mobility. Watch for rolling barbel and carp at dusk, silvers topping on canals and bait fish scattering from predators. Be prepared to move pegs, change lines and adjust feed rates rather than sitting on unproductive spots; the anglers who adapt quickest tend to put the most fish on the bank around Leeds.
