Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Leicester
Leicester fishing revolves around the River Soar system, the Grand Union Canal, and a ring of commercial and club stillwaters around the city. This mix gives Leicester anglers everything from quick after-work sessions for silvers to full-day campaigns for carp and barbel. Access is generally good, with many pegs close to parking and a lot of water fishable with simple, reliable methods.
On the River Soar, seasonal patterns dictate your approach. In warmer months, fish spread out over glides and slower runs. Target barbel and chub on outside bends, below weirs, and where side streams rejoin the main flow. Summer tactics centre on feeders and straight leads with pellets, meat, or boilies, with a few free offerings to get fish rooting about. In low, clear water, step down to lighter hooklengths and smaller pellets or cubes, and fish into the evening when the bigger barbel move confidently.
Through autumn and winter, Soar roach, perch, and bream become prime targets. Look for steadier water below locks, on inside lines of bends, and at the tails of deeper holes. A cage feeder with groundbait and chopped worm or maggots picks off mixed bags, while a classic stick float or waggler approach scores on milder days. Pike and zander patrol the same areas; deadbaits fished just off the crease or near moored boats regularly produce, with smaller baits often out-fishing larger offerings on pressured stretches.
The Grand Union Canal around Leicester is a consistent option when rivers are carrying extra water. Canals here respond well to pole and short rod work. In summer, start on bread punch or pinkies down the track for roach and skimmers, feeding very lightly to avoid pulling fish off your line. Perch love the far shelf and any visible features like reeds, bridges, and boat hulls; a small worm or red maggot on a size 18–16 hook is a dependable choice. In winter, scale down to fine lines, tiny hooks, and single maggot or pinkie, focusing on the deeper central track and any slight depth changes.
Leicester’s many stillwaters and commercial fisheries offer predictable carp and F1 action. In spring, target the warmer, shallower ends and islands; method feeders with wafters, small pellets, or sweet corn work well, as does a simple bomb and pellet to showing fish. As water warms, margin fishing comes into its own: heavy, regular feeding of pellets or groundbait brings carp, F1s, and big ide tight in, especially late in the day.
On more natural lakes and club waters, tench and bream are key targets from late spring. Choose clean, silty areas rather than heavy weed beds, and fish inline feeders or helicopter rigs with sweet groundbait, micros, and a worm or corn hook bait. For consistent results across Leicester venues, travel with a compact selection: pellets in a couple of sizes, sweetcorn, maggots, a fishmeal and a sweeter groundbait, plus a mix of hook patterns from fine-wire for roach to stronger carp hooks. Keep rigs simple, feed modestly to start, and adjust your attack based on bites and visible activity.
