Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 16:28 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview London

London’s fishing scene is built around three main water types: the tidal and non-tidal Thames, the London canal network (Grand Union, Regent’s, Lee Navigation) and a dense spread of park lakes and day-ticket commercials. Each fishes differently through the year, so planning by season matters. Winter on the Thames and canals is prime time for perch, pike and zander, with predators holding around marinas, bridges and warm-water outflows. Spring brings improving silver fish sport with roach, dace and bream shoaling more predictably, while early summer into autumn is the main window for barbel, chub and carp in both rivers and stillwaters.

On the Thames through west and south-west London, barbel are the headline species. Focus on gravel runs, crease lines where fast and slow water meet and the tails of boat channels. A simple running ledger rig with 8–12 mm pellets or meat on strong line is the staple approach. In coloured or rising water, step up feeder size and fish slightly shorter hooklengths to keep baits nailed to the deck. Summer evenings are especially productive; keep feed tight by casting to the same clip and resist topping up too aggressively once fish arrive.

For roach, dace and skimmers in central and outer London, the Thames, Lee Navigation and canals respond well to classic float and feeder work. On canals, a 4–6 m pole or light waggler set just overdepth with groundbait and pinkie, maggot or small worm segments is dependable. Feed little and often, starting cautiously until you gauge fish response. On the Thames, cage feeder tactics with a dark, fine groundbait and double maggot or caster will pick out better roach and the odd bonus bream. Target steady glides, downstream of bridges and inside lines of bends where flow eases.

Predator anglers in London do well by working structure. Perch stack tight to moored boats, lock cuts, concrete pilings and overhanging cover on the Thames and canals. Small soft plastics on jig heads, 3–7 g, fished slowly near bottom are deadly. In colder months, pause frequently to trigger takes. Pike and zander prefer deeper holes, marinas and the edges of main boat channels; wobbling deadbaits at first light and last knockings can out-fish lures on pressured stretches. Always use wire or heavy fluorocarbon traces and check for damage after every fish.

London’s park lakes and club waters provide reliable carp and mixed coarse fishing. In clearer, weedy venues, light leads, short fluorocarbon hooklinks and subtle wafters or sweetcorn produce consistent bites. On more heavily stocked commercials, method feeders with micro pellets and small banded wafters excel; keep casts tight to features like islands, margins and reed lines. Summer carp often patrol margins, so arrive early, travel light and feed tiny pockets of pellets or chopped boilie to intercept them at your feet.

Across all London venues, stealth and accuracy are big advantages. Busy urban banks mean fish are used to noise, but they still shy away from repeated heavy leads and clumsy bankside movement. Use line clips, count down your rigs to depth and line up casts on distant markers to build small, tight fishing areas. By matching tactics to water type and season, London’s canals, rivers and park lakes can deliver consistent, varied fishing within minutes of the city’s transport hubs.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 2 main harbours in this area.
