Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 16:28 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Maidenhead

Maidenhead’s fishing is dominated by the non-tidal River Thames, with productive banks and boat-accessed water from Cookham downstream through Maidenhead Bridge, Boulter’s Lock and Bray. This stretch offers mixed-species sport year-round, with consistent shoals of silver fish and chances of specimen chub, barbel, pike and carp for anglers who approach it methodically.

Seasonally, autumn and early winter are prime for roach, perch and pike along the town reaches and near marinas and back channels. As temperatures drop, focus on slower, steadier water below locks like Boulter’s, where bait naturally pauses and fish congregate. Late winter into early spring can be more scratchy but rewards patient anglers targeting chub and perch holding under boats, bridges and along cover. From late spring into summer, the river around Maidenhead responds well to float and feeder tactics for roach, skimmers and bream, while barbel, chub and carp become more active along pacey gravel runs and marginal shelves.

Habitat-wise, the key features are the weir pools and tail-outs near Boulter’s Lock, the deeper bends and bridge pilings around Maidenhead Bridge, and the slower, uniform depths near Bray. Marinas, moored boats and off-channel areas often hold dense shoals of small fish, which in turn attract perch, pike and zander. Look for changes in flow: crease lines where fast and slow water meet, eddies behind islands or boats, and the downstream ends of gravel bars all concentrate fish and make precise presentation easier.

For roach, dace and smaller skimmers, light float or waggler tactics with fine tackle score strongly, especially when you feed small, regular helpings of maggots, casters or hemp to build a swim. On deeper, slower sections, a cage feeder with groundbait and small hookbaits such as maggot or worm sections is a reliable way to locate bream and better roach. Step up hooklengths and feeder size when targeting bream shoals on the wider, deeper runs below locks.

Chub and barbel around Maidenhead respond well to more robust tactics. Target gravelly runs, beneath overhanging trees and alongside moored boats, using feeders or straight leads with pellets, meat, or boilies. Cast tight to cover and be prepared to move regularly until you find feeding fish. In summer, trotting bread flake or maggot along the margins at first light can produce surprisingly big chub in the town sections where there’s steady footfall and bread going in from the public.

Predator anglers should work the marinas, boatyards and deep margins for perch, pike and zander. Small soft plastics and paddle-tails jigged close to the bottom are deadly for perch and zander, especially around structure and drop-offs. For pike, travel light with spinners, crankbaits or deadbaits, concentrating on slack water behind boats, bends and weir pools. Vary retrieve speed and depth until you locate active fish, and keep moving – covering water is crucial on this broad, pressured river.
