Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Manchester
Fishing in Manchester centres on a mix of canals, rivers, commercial fisheries and reservoirs, all within easy reach of the city. The River Irwell, River Mersey system, Manchester Ship Canal and extensive canal network offer classic North West coarse fishing, while surrounding day-ticket lakes provide reliable carp and mixed-specimen sport. Urban stretches can be surprisingly productive if you approach them with a stealthy, watercraft-focused mindset.
Seasonally, winter in Manchester suits pike, perch and silver fish on the Irwell, Ship Canal and local canals. Slow the presentation right down: small deadbaits or wobbling sprats for pike, and tiny soft plastics, dropshot rigs or maggots for perch and roach. Focus on deeper, slower areas such as canal basins, lock cuttings and turning bays where fish shoal up in colder water. On commercials, winter carp respond to single bright wafters, maggot feeder tactics and small method feeders cast accurately onto hard-fed spots.
Spring brings the canals, Irwell side-streams and smaller club waters to life. Roach, skimmers and early-tench respond to groundbait and chopped worm in the slacker water off the main flow. On Manchester’s canals, look for features: bridge holes, moored boats, marinas and bends. A simple pole or light waggler with pinkies, maggots and a little micro pellet feed is enough to build steady nets of silvers, with bonus perch and F1 carp.
In summer, carp and mixed-species fishing peak around Greater Manchester. Commercial fisheries to the north, south and east of the city offer pellet-waggler, method-feeder and shallow-pole sport with carp, F1s and ide. Fish tight to islands, shallow bars and margins in the last two hours of light using 6–8 mm pellets, meat or corn. On the Irwell and related rivers, warm low water highlights chub and barbel in faster runs and under cover such as overhanging trees, bridges and walls. Target these with simple running rigs, using pellets, luncheon meat or boilies, and keep loose feed steady but controlled to avoid overfeeding.
Autumn is prime time for specimen hunting in the Manchester area. As temperatures drop, big perch and pike move actively on the Ship Canal, canal junctions and deeper river bends. Fan casts with small crankbaits, jigs or dropshot rigs along man-made structure — pilings, walls and lock entrances — and pause frequently to trigger takes. For bream and skimmers on canals and slower river sections, switch to groundbait feeder tactics with worm, maggot or fluoro pinkies on the hook, building the swim with regular but modest casting.
Tactically, Manchester’s urban venues reward fine presentation and mobility. Use lighter mainlines and hooklengths on the canals than you might on commercials, and be prepared to move swims every 30–40 minutes if you are not getting indications. On busy city stretches, early mornings and weekday sessions see less disturbance, which often translates to better sport. Polarised glasses help you read features in coloured water, and a small rucksack approach lets you cover multiple pegs quickly.
Whether you are targeting canal roach in the city centre, specimen carp on surrounding commercials or predatory pike and perch on the Irwell and Ship Canal, Manchester offers year-round fishing for anglers who pay attention to weather, flow and urban structure. Think carefully about location, scale your tackle to the venue, and you can enjoy consistent sport within minutes of the city.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 2 main harbours in this area.
