Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 16:41 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Norwich

Fishing in Norwich revolves around the River Wensum as it winds through and around the city, with easy access to both flowing river and nearby stillwaters. The Wensum is a classic lowland river: bends, gravel runs, reed-lined margins and deeper holding pools where coarse species and predators thrive. Within a short drive, anglers can also tap into the Norfolk Broads system and numerous day‑ticket lakes, giving Norwich a diverse and productive fishing scene.

Seasonal patterns on the Wensum are well defined. In spring, roach, dace and chub feed confidently in shallow runs and along the edges as water temperatures lift. Trotting a stick float or bolo down pacey glides with maggot, caster or small pieces of bread is particularly effective. Early summer brings improved sport with chub, barbel and perch around cover; dusk and dawn sessions excel, especially when targeting fish tight to overhanging trees and reed beds. Through high summer, weed growth creates clear channels—precise presentation is vital. By autumn, predator fishing peaks, with pike, perch and zander (where present) following shoals of roach and skimmers into deeper bends and marinas. In winter, expect clearer water; smaller hooks, lighter lines and a steady trickle of loose feed are key to keeping bites coming from roach, dace and occasional big chub.

Habitat types vary along the Norwich stretch. Inside and just outside the city, you’ll find concrete and brick embankments, moorings and bridges—prime ambush points for perch and pike, particularly where boats churn up the bottom and baitfish congregate. Further out, the river meanders through more rural ground with gravel shallows, deeper holes and undercut banks. Here, look for changes in pace, crease lines where fast and slow water meet, and any cover—branches, reed clumps, or small inlets. Adjacent stillwaters and Broads offshoots tend to be weedy in summer, with clear margins over firm silt where bream, tench and carp patrol early and late in the day.

Common techniques are classic river methods. For silver fish and smaller chub, a 13 ft float rod, 3–4 lb main line and light hooklength with size 18–20 hooks is ideal. Feed little and often with maggots, casters or hemp, adjusting shotting and depth regularly until you find the main line of fish. For bigger chub and barbel in heavier water, step up to 5–8 lb line and ledger tactics with feeders or straight leads. Bread flake, luncheon meat and cheese paste all score well, especially in coloured water after rain. Target pike and larger perch with deadbaits or lures: small to medium spoons, crankbaits and soft plastics worked along drop‑offs, boat channels and mooring edges are consistent producers.

Tactical tips for Norwich fishing focus on mobility and watercraft. Travel light and cover multiple spots rather than sitting static; Wensum fish often hold tightly to specific features. On pressured stretches, scale down—fine hooklengths, smaller baits and subtle feeding patterns will outfish bulk tactics. In coloured water, use brighter or larger lures for predators and bolder baits for chub and barbel. On clearer, low rivers, long hooklengths, natural baits and minimal disturbance become critical. For stillwaters around the city, fish over small, regular groundbait and micro‑pellet doses, keeping rigs pinned to the deck to avoid spooking wary carp, bream and tench.

Whether you’re trotting for winter roach in the city centre, freelining crust under summer trees for chub, or working lures along moorings for pike, Norwich offers year‑round fishing with enough variety to keep both local and visiting anglers challenged and engaged.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 4 beaches and bays in this area.
