Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 16:51 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Salford

Salford’s fishing is defined by its urban waterways: the River Irwell as it winds through the city, the stillwaters of Salford Quays, and stretches of the Bridgewater Canal and Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal nearby. Despite the concrete surroundings, these venues hold excellent stocks of coarse fish, with realistic chances of double-figure carp and pike, chunky barbel in the Irwell, and plentiful silver fish for match-style sport.

Seasonally, winter on the Irwell and canals is prime time for roach, perch and pike. Clearer water calls for finer end tackle: small wire traces for pike, light fluorocarbon for silver fish, and scaled-down hooks and feeders. Perch respond to small worms or red maggots fished tight to structure, while pike often patrol marinas, bridges and canal junctions; deadbaits such as smelt or sardine fished just off the bottom are consistent producers in cold, coloured water.

Spring sees the Irwell’s barbel and chub become more active. Once water temperatures rise, ledgered meat, pellets or boilies presented in the heavier runs, especially below weirs and bridges, will pick out better fish. On calmer canal and Quays venues, this is also the time when carp begin to move into the margins on warmer afternoons. Simple method feeder rigs with 6–8 mm pellets or small wafters cast to features like moored boats, overflows and obvious shelves score well.

Summer opens up the best of Salford’s mixed fishing. On bright, warm days, the main challenge is pressure and water clarity. Fish early and late: dawn and dusk sessions on the Irwell produce barbel, chub and the odd big perch on trotted maggot or caster, or on small cage feeders packed with groundbait and hemp. For the canals and Salford Quays, margin fishing with strong pole or waggler gear comes into its own. Loose-feed maggots or micro pellets little and often, then present a banded pellet, corn or double maggot over the top for roach, skimmers and opportunist carp.

Autumn is trophy time. Cooling water pushes baitfish into tighter shoals, and the predators follow. Around Salford Quays, lure fishing with shads, paddle tails and small jerkbaits works extremely well for perch and pike; vary your retrieve speed and keep baits close to the bottom steps and drop-offs. On the Irwell, this is the best period for a big barbel or chub, especially after rainfall colours the river. Step up your line strength, use robust hooklengths and feed pellets and broken boilies through a feeder to hold fish in the swim.

Across all venues, successful anglers focus on three things: location, scale and stealth. In an urban setting, fish are heavily pressured yet strongly tied to cover. Target moored boats, bridge pilings, outfalls, marinas and any visible change in depth. Match your tackle to the venue—fine but not fragile on canals, genuinely strong on the Irwell and at the Quays where snags and big fish are common. Finally, travel light so you can keep moving until you find fish, keep disturbance to a minimum, and let regular, modest feeding build the swim rather than over-baiting from the start.
