Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 16:42 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury fishing is dominated by the middle River Severn, a broad, powerful river curling around the town and offering classic mixed-species fishing. Anglers target hard-fighting barbel and chub in the main flow, quality roach and dace in steadier water, and predators such as pike and zander in the deeper town sections and marina basins. Nearby pools and commercials provide reliable carp, bream and tench fishing when the river is out of sorts.

Seasonal patterns on the Severn around Shrewsbury are quite predictable. In late spring and through summer, warm-water species like barbel and chub respond well once levels settle after any spates. Early mornings and evenings are prime, with fish moving into shallower runs and gravel glides to feed. Roach and dace shoals spread out along crease lines and below bridges. Autumn is peak time for barbel weight gains and for predator fishing; as temperatures drop, pike and zander become more active around drop-offs and marina mouths. In winter, the town sections shine for silverfish, with roach, dace and perch concentrating in slower, deeper bends and near moored boats, offering good sport on light gear even in cold conditions.

Key habitats and areas include fast, gravelly runs and riffles just upstream and downstream of the main town bridges for barbel and chub. Look for pronounced crease lines where main flow meets slack water, the tails of weir pools, and any visible gravel areas. Deeper outside bends and man-made features such as walls, pilings and moorings hold roach, perch and predators. Where feeder streams or drains enter the Severn, there are often scoured depressions and colour changes that concentrate fish, especially after rain.

Effective techniques and rigs on the Severn are straightforward but need to be robust. For barbel and chub, a 1.5–1.75 lb test-curve rod with 10–12 lb main line, running leads and short hooklengths is the norm. Fish pellets, meat, boilies or large bunches of maggots, feeding via a cage feeder or small PVA bags. In coloured water, increase hookbait size and use high-leakage baits; in clear, low summer levels, scale down to smaller hooks and lighter hooklengths, and fish later in the day.

For roach and dace in town sections, a 13 ft float rod or light feeder outfit with 3–4 lb line is ideal. Pole or waggler fished over steady loose feeding with maggots, pinkies or casters will keep bites coming. When the river carries extra pace, a block-end feeder with maggots or groundbait works well, dropping the feed on the same line every cast to build a tight shoal.

Predator tactics revolve around structure and depth. Target pike and zander with deadbaits such as smelt, roach or lamprey fished on simple ledger rigs near boat channels, marina entrances and deep bends. In clearer conditions, lure fishing with shads, soft-jigged paddletails and crankbaits allows you to cover water quickly; work lures close to the bottom and along the edge of the main flow. Perch often sit tight to cover, so scale down to smaller soft plastics and jigs.

Stillwaters around Shrewsbury typically hold carp, bream, tench and mixed silvers. Commercial-style fisheries respond to method feeders with pellets or wafters, bomb and pellet, and margin fishing with corn or meat in the last hours of light. On more natural pools, simple float fishing near reedbeds, overhanging trees or lily pads with worms, corn or bread can produce tench and quality carp, especially during warm, stable weather.

By matching tactics to river level, clarity and season, and focusing on key features like creases, gravel runs and deep bends, anglers around Shrewsbury can consistently connect with the area’s diverse and prolific fish stocks.
