Fishing Overview Slough

Fishing in Slough revolves around a mix of canals, stillwaters and nearby river stretches that cater especially well to carp and mixed coarse fishing. Many of the lakes are former gravel pits that hold big, wary carp alongside shoals of bream, tench and silver fish, while the Grand Union Canal and local cuts offer more traditional canal sport with roach, perch and the odd bonus pike or zander. Being close to Windsor and the Thames corridor, Slough anglers can also access running water within a short drive.

Spring in the Slough area is prime time for targeting waking carp and tench in the local pits and commercials. As water temperatures creep up, look for south-facing margins, shallow shelves and reed-fringed bays where fish bask and patrol. Simple method feeders or inline leads with small wafters and bright pop-ups score well at this time, especially over lightly scattered pellets. On clearer gravel pits, an understated approach with fluorocarbon hooklengths, smaller hooks and subtle pop-ups fished just off silt pockets can make a big difference.

Summer brings reliable mixed fishing on the canals near Slough. Early and late in the day, roach, rudd and perch line up down the track or across to the far shelf. Pole or light waggler tactics with groundbait laced with pinkies, maggots or casters will keep bites coming. Loose-feed little and often rather than dumping in a big hit of bait, as boat traffic and tow can move fish around. Perch gather tight to locks, bridges and any overhanging cover, where small worm sections or prawn baits tempt better fish.

For specimen carp through the warmer months on Slough’s gravel pits, focus on features: gravel bars, plateaus, snaggy margins and reed lines. A baiting strategy built around quality boilies, hemp and maize is effective, but avoid overfeeding on pressured waters. Solid PVA bags with micro pellets and a trimmed wafter are deadly when casting to showing fish or the edges of weed beds. On weedy waters, consider chod rigs or helicopter setups that present effectively on top of debris while remaining tangle-free.

Autumn is often the most consistent period for big bags of bream and quality roach on both lakes and canals. On stillwaters, fish offshore over groundbait and chopped worm using feeder or slider float, targeting 10–20 feet of water where shoals gather. On the canal, step up hooklengths slightly and use darker groundbait mixes to match the water colour. Keep an eye out for silver fish dimpling at dusk; switching to a lighter rig and smaller hook can turn a few fish into a serious haul.

In winter around Slough, canal stretches and deeper lakes remain the most dependable venues. Zander and pike become prime targets on the canal; travel light with drop-shot gear for zander, using small soft lures worked slowly along the boat channel, and carry a couple of deadbait rods for static pike fishing in marinas, bends and near bridges. For cold-water carp in the pits, scale down to single hookbaits, small PVA sticks and high-attract, low-feed tactics, placing rigs tight to features or winter holding areas identified during warmer months.

Across the Slough area, mobility and observation are key. Walk the banks before committing, look for subtle signs of life such as bubbling, surface movement or coloured water, and be prepared to adjust depth and feed rate as conditions change. With thoughtful tactics tuned to each venue, Slough’s canals, pits and nearby rivers offer rewarding year-round coarse and carp fishing.
