Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Southampton
Southampton offers diverse sea and estuary fishing focused around Southampton Water, the River Itchen and the eastern Solent. Tidal flow, mixed ground and sheltered access mean there is almost always somewhere fishable, even in rough weather. The main patterns are spring–autumn lure and bait fishing for bass, bream and smoothhounds, and winter bait fishing for cod, whiting and rays.
From late April through October, bass are the headline species. They patrol structure along the Itchen, the container terminal walls, jetties and open shingle beaches towards Weston and Netley. On clear flood tides, small soft plastics (7–12 cm paddle tails on 7–14 g jig heads) fished tight to the edges and current seams produce consistent fish. At night or in coloured water, switch to bait: peeler crab, ragworm or fresh mackerel strips on a simple running ledger with a 2–3 ft fluorocarbon hooklength and size 1/0–3/0 hooks.
Southampton Water’s mixed sand and mud ground holds rays, smoothhounds, dogfish and whiting. For thornback and undulate rays, target the deeper channels on mid to large tides, especially over slack to first push of the flood. Use whole squid, bluey or sandeel on a pulley rig with 4/0 hooks and 40–60 lb hooklengths to cope with abrasion. Smoothhounds show well from late May to September; crab baits are crucial, fished on a strong running ledger or pulley pennel, with 20–30 lb mainline to handle powerful runs in the tide.
Winter brings cod, channel whiting and bigger rays. Focus on night sessions around the larger tides. Fresh lugworm or lug/squid cocktails fished at medium range from deeper shore marks consistently pick up codling and better whiting. Keep rigs streamlined: a clipped-down two-hook flapper or single clipped-down rig improves casting distance and bait presentation in the strong Solent airflow.
The River Itchen and upper reaches of Southampton Water fish well for flounder, plaice and mullet. Flounder fall to simple running ledger rigs baited with ragworm or maddies, cast into the edges of the channel and left to sit; small, frequent moves often out-fish static tactics. Plaice prefer cleaner, sandy patches with gentle tide: use blinged-up bead booms and long snoods with ragworm or tipped lug. Mullet demand stealth and finesse: light float or feeder tactics with bread flake, mashed bread groundbait and 4–6 lb line are key around marinas, slipways and outfalls.
Summer and early autumn see shoals of mackerel, scad and garfish pushing into Southampton Water on neap tides and settled weather. Small metal lures (15–30 g) or strings of size 4–6 feathers retrieved steadily through mid-water take fish quickly when they are present. Boat anglers running out of the city’s marinas reach inshore wrecks and banks that hold pollack, bass, tope and bigger rays; standard approaches are flowing traces with fish baits for tope and rays, and lead-head lures or flying collar rigs for pollack.
Tactically, Southampton fishing revolves around tide timing and water clarity. Plan sessions around the last of the flood and first of the ebb for bass and smoothhounds, and avoid the very strongest spring flows on exposed marks where weed can be a problem. In coloured water, scale up baits and use strong scent; in clear conditions, fish lighter, more natural presentations and longer hooklengths. A 12 ft beachcaster rated 4–6 oz with a 6500-sized reel covers most shore work, while a 9–10 ft lure rod rated 10–40 g is ideal for mobile bass fishing along the city’s sea walls and access points.

Wharf's or Jetties are good places to wet a line and meet other fishermen. They often produce a fresh feed of fish and are also great to catch bait fish. As they are often well lit, they also provide a good opportunity for night fishing. There are 6 wharf(s) in this area.
North Wall Jetty - 23.39488008808km , North Railway Jetty - 23.43753437913km , Sheer Jetty - 23.47795030728km , Pitch House Jetty - 23.51706421781km , Boat House Jetty - 23.55238984679km , South Railway Jetty - 23.67636842132km
Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 5 beaches and bays in this area.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 4 main harbours in this area.
