Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 16:50 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview St Helens

St Helens fishing is dominated by well-managed coarse and carp venues, backed up by productive canal stretches and small ponds dotted around the town. Within a short drive you’ll find commercial fisheries with match-style layouts, natural-feeling club waters and sections of the St Helens Canal system that respond well to careful baiting. This mix makes St Helens a strong base for anglers looking to catch everything from silver fish on light pole rigs to double-figure carp on method feeders.

Seasonally, late spring through early autumn is prime for carp, F1s and mixed-bag fishing on the commercials. As water temperatures rise, margin fishing with corn, meat or soft pellets becomes extremely effective in the last two hours of light. In high summer, shallow tactics with pellets or slapping rigs score well on the pole for F1s and small carp, especially on pressured day-ticket lakes. Autumn often brings the better stamp fish; scale down slightly, fish tighter to any features and feed more cautiously to pick off bonus carp and quality bream. Winter shifts the focus to silver fish on canals and deeper pools, with pinkies, maggots and bread punches on fine tackle producing steady sport.

Habitat-wise, many St Helens commercials are purpose-built with evenly spaced pegs, open water, island chuck options and well-defined margins. Target island shelves and any overhanging cover with method feeders or small bomb rigs, especially on clear, bright days. Margins are key late in the day—look for undercut banks, reed beds and any deeper holes close in. On local canals and more natural ponds, concentrate on boat channels, turning bays, bridge areas and any visible cover such as rushes or overhanging trees where roach, perch and skimmers naturally hold.

In terms of tactics, pole and feeder fishing dominate around St Helens. For commercials, a typical approach is to start short on the pole with micros and expanders for F1s and silvers, then switch to a method feeder tight to an island with 6–8 mm wafters or pellets for carp. Keep the feed controlled—little and often—and adjust frequency rather than quantity if bites slow. On canals, a 4 m to 11 m pole line with groundbait, pinkies and a few casters will pick off roach and skimmers; a lighter waggler or small bomb can be used to reach across to far-bank features.

Pike, perch and the occasional zander provide a lure and deadbait option on deeper cuts and reservoirs near St Helens through autumn and winter. Small soft plastics, 5–8 cm shads and compact spinnerbaits fished along the boat channel or near marinas work well when water clarity allows. Always carry a selection of hooklength sizes and hook patterns to adapt quickly—small wide-gape hooks for pellets and maggots, stronger patterns for meat and corn when bigger carp show up. By reading the venue, feeding carefully and rotating lines, anglers around St Helens can put together consistent nets throughout the year.
