Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 16:43 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Stafford

Fishing around Stafford, United Kingdom centres on classic Midlands coarse venues: the River Sow, stretches of the Staffordshire & Worcester Canal, and a good spread of stillwaters and commercial fisheries within a short drive of town. With carp, barbel, chub, bream and silver fish all present locally, anglers can pick between natural river sport, canal consistency or heavily stocked commercial pools depending on conditions and personal preference.

The River Sow provides intimate, snaggy river fishing where accurate presentation is rewarded. In spring and autumn, chub and roach respond well to simple trotting tactics with a stick float, 3–4 lb mainline and size 16–18 hooks. Feed steady trickles of maggots or casters and search along cover, overhanging trees and crease lines. In summer, larger chub and occasional barbel can be taken by freelining bread, meat or pellets tight to features; travel light, keep bankside disturbance low and work multiple swims rather than sitting long in one spot.

During warmer months, barbel and chub on the Sow tend to feed best in low light – early morning and late evening. Use strong but balanced gear: 8–10 lb mainline, abrasion-resistant hooklengths and size 10–12 hooks. Small PVA bags of pellets, or a bait dropper to introduce hemp and broken pellets, help pin fish down. In winter, the river is more of a roach and dace proposition, with bread punch or maggot fished on light feeders or running floats in steadier glides.

The Staffordshire & Worcester Canal near Stafford is a reliable option when rivers run high or cold. It suits classic canal approaches: a 4–6 m pole or light waggler rod with 0.08–0.12 mm hooklengths and size 18–20 hooks will cover most silver fish work. Plumbing the depth accurately is crucial – you’ll often find fish sitting just off the near shelf or down the track in the central channel. Feed small but regular amounts of pinkies, squatts or micro pellets to build a swim, and be prepared for bonus perch tight to boats, moorings and any visible structure.

Commercial and club stillwaters around Stafford typically hold good stocks of carp, f1s, bream and tench. In spring, pellets and corn fished on method feeders or simple inline bomb rigs score well, especially cast to island margins or the edge of any reedbeds. As water warms in late spring and summer, margin fishing comes into its own; use a short pole rig with strong elastic, 0.14–0.16 mm hooklengths and pellets, corn or meat over a bed of micros. Loosefeed steadily rather than dumping large amounts of bait at once.

On warmer, settled days, shallow fishing for carp and f1s can be devastating. Mugging fish with a pole and pellet, or fishing a pellet waggler tight to the far bank, works when carp cruise high in the water. In contrast, during winter, Stafford’s stillwaters favour small, neat presentations: light method feeders or cage feeders with minimal groundbait, tiny hookbaits such as single maggots or 4 mm wafters, and long, fine hooklengths fished over sparsely fed areas.

Predator anglers find pike and perch in both canal and stillwaters. In cooler months, wobbling deadbaits along the canal or working small soft lures along drop-offs and boat channels will locate active fish. Keep moving until you find concentrations of prey species on the sounder or by watching where silver fish show. Across Stafford’s waters, success hinges on reading each venue’s features, matching tactics to season and staying mobile enough to track fish as conditions change.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
