Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 16:50 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Stockport

The Stockport area gives coarse and predator anglers a mix of recovering rivers and productive stillwaters, with the River Mersey, Goyt and Tame forming the backbone of local fishing. These urban and semi‑urban systems now hold strong populations of barbel, chub and silver fish, while nearby commercials and club waters cater for carp, tench and mixed‑bag sport. Understanding seasonal movements between fast runs, deeper glides and sheltered pools is key to consistent catches around Stockport.

Seasonal patterns on the rivers follow classic spate‑river behaviour. In late winter and early spring, chub are the main target, often found under cover along the Mersey and Goyt; bread flake, cheesepaste and small boilies work well in steadier water. As temperatures rise from April into early summer, shoals of dace and roach spread through the runs, responding to maggot, caster and small worms on light tackle. Summer and early autumn are prime time for barbel and bigger chub; evening and after‑dark sessions with pellets, meat or boilies score well in deeper runs and tails of weirpools.

Stillwaters around Stockport typically fish best from spring through late autumn. In April and May, tench and bream feed confidently in the margins and over light groundbait, while carp patrol warmer, shallow areas. Through summer, commercial fisheries come into their own with F1s, carp and ide taking pellets and paste on pole or method feeder. As autumn cools the water, downsize hookbaits to maggot or 4–6 mm pellets for steady mixed‑bag fishing, then switch focus to perch and pike once the first frosts arrive.

Key habitats on the Mersey, Goyt and Tame include crease lines where fast and slow water meet, overhanging trees, undercut banks and the tails of bends. Barbel often hold just off the main flow on gravel runs, while chub favour cover—branches, rafts and bridge pilings. In higher water, fish drop into slacks and inside lines; when levels fall and clear, they push back into faster, oxygen‑rich runs. On stillwaters, look for reed‑beds, islands, shelves dropping from 3–6 ft, and any change in bottom type from silt to gravel.

Effective techniques are largely dictated by flow and venue pressure. On the rivers, a 10–12 ft barbel or Avon rod with 8–12 lb main line and a simple running lead or feeder rig covers most situations. Feed small pellets, broken boilies or hemp via a feeder, with a hair‑rigged pellet, meat cube or mini boilie on the hook. For roach and dace, step down to a light waggler or stick‑float set just tripping bottom, feeding maggots little and often—especially productive on the Goyt and Tame in steadier glides.

On commercials and ponds, short‑range pole work with micro pellets and soft pellets or corn is a reliable approach for carp and F1s. The method feeder with a small wafter or banded pellet excels when fish are further out or under pressure. For specimen carp, swap to stronger gear, solid hooks and bottom baits or wafters presented tight to islands or along features. Predator anglers should focus on deeper river holes and stillwater drop‑offs in late autumn and winter, using deadbaits or lures worked slowly along the bottom.

Throughout Stockport’s waters, success comes from observation and refinement: watch for rolling barbel and topping silvers at dusk, adjust shotting to match subtle changes in flow, and keep feed tight and controlled. With this tactical approach, anglers can unlock consistent sport from the Mersey valleys to the town’s surrounding lakes.
