Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Sunderland
Fishing in Sunderland revolves around three main areas: the River Wear, Roker and Seaburn beaches, and the long, productive Roker Pier. Together they offer consistent sea fishing in most weather, with species ranging from winter cod and coalfish to summer mackerel, bass and flatfish. Mixed clean and rough ground means you can choose between scratching for bites or targeting bigger fish with heavy gear.
Seasonal patterns are clear on this section of the North East coast. From late autumn through winter, cod, coalfish and whiting dominate catches from Roker Pier, the river mouth and the rock edges towards Marsden. This is prime time for heavy baits and big fish, especially during and just after North Sea blows when coloured water pushes feeding fish tight to shore. Spring sees increasing numbers of flounder and dab in the lower Wear and on the cleaner patches of Seaburn and Whitburn beaches, with resident cod and coalies still about in harsher years. Summer brings shoals of mackerel, herring and garfish to the pier, along with bass, pollack and wrasse around the rockier margins. Late summer and early autumn are good for mixed-bag sessions and the chance of rays or smoothhound on crab baits.
The River Wear inside the piers provides shelter when the sea is unfishable. The lower river holds flounder, dab, eel and school bass, with occasional codling in colder months. Light beach or estuary rods, small fixed spool reels and two or three-hook flapper rigs with size 2–1 hooks work well here. Baits such as ragworm, lugworm and crab peeler are consistent, with tipped cocktail baits (worm plus a sliver of mackerel) helping draw bites in coloured water.
Roker Pier is Sunderland’s headline mark. The outer wall and end fish into deep water with mixed ground, producing cod, coalfish, whiting and flatfish in winter and a lot of mackerel and pollack in summer. Standard beach rods of 12–13ft with 5–6oz casting capacity, shockleaders and clipped-down pulley or loop rigs are effective for distance work. Use 4/0–5/0 strong hooks with peeler crab, lug, bluey or squid for cod and coalies. For mackerel and summer species, spinning with 1–2oz metals, float fishing strips of mackerel along the wall, or feathering in mid-water all score.
The beaches at Roker and Seaburn are mainly clean sand with patches of stone, ideal for surf fishing. Winter whiting and flatties fall to simple two- or three-hook flappers baited with lug, rag and mackerel strip; codling are usually targeted on the rougher patches and gutters using pulley Pennel rigs and bigger worm-and-squid or crab baits. In calmer, warmer months, scale down to lighter lines and smaller hooks to pick up flounder, dab and the odd bass moving along the surf line.
Across Sunderland marks, tactical timing makes a big difference. Many anglers favour the last two hours of the flooding tide and the first of the ebb, especially around dusk and into darkness. After heavy seas, concentrate on the first settled tides as fish move in to feed over stirred-up ground. Keep rigs streamlined for distance, match hook size to bait and target species, and always carry spare gear: the mixed ground common off Sunderland means tackle losses are normal but often coincide with the best fishing.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 8 beaches and bays in this area.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 5 main harbours in this area.
