Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 13:28 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. Fishing Overview Worcester

Worcester sits on one of the most famous coarse fishing rivers in the UK – the middle River Severn. Around the city, the Severn, the Worcester & Birmingham Canal and a ring of well-stocked commercial fisheries provide varied and reliable sport. Barbel, chub, bream, roach and perch dominate, with pike and zander offering strong predator fishing in colder months.

Seasonal patterns on the Severn are pronounced. In late spring and throughout summer, warm flows bring barbel and chub into classic crease lines, tails of gravel runs and undercut banks. Mild summer evenings are ideal for rolling meat or fishing static halibut pellets, with many anglers targeting the dusk-to-dark feeding spell. Autumn is prime time for bigger barbel and chub as they feed hard; step up hooklengths, use heavier leads to hold bottom in extra water, and feed a steady trickle of pellets or hemp. Winter sees sport switch toward roach, dace, perch and predators. When the river is low and clear, scale down to fine hooklengths and small hooks with bread flake, maggots or pinkies. During coloured, rising water, larger baits like lobworms or cheesepaste score well for chub.

Worcester’s stretches of the Worcester & Birmingham Canal offer more controlled conditions when the Severn is high or unfishable. The canal holds roach, skimmers, perch and the odd bonus bream or tench. A simple pole or light waggler setup with groundbait and pinkies is enough to keep bites coming, especially around marinas, bridge holes and wider pound sections where fish naturally group up. Perch cluster around moored boats, ladders and any visible structure; small worms or prawn baits fished just off the bottom can be deadly.

Commercial stillwaters around Worcester focus heavily on carp, F1s, bream and tench. These venues fish consistently in all but the coldest conditions. In warmer months, pellet waggler, method feeder and shallow pole tactics dominate, with 6–8 mm pellets, corn and meat key hookbaits. In winter, switch to smaller hooks, fine lines and micro pellets or maggots on the hook, fishing tight to islands, shelves and any visible cover. On heavily pressured commercials, feeding less but more accurately often outperforms piling in bait.

Predator anglers on the Severn around Worcester focus on pike and zander. Autumn and winter are best, particularly on dull days or in coloured water after rain. Ledgered deadbaits such as roach or smelt work well for pike, while smaller deadbaits or jigged soft plastics near the bottom are effective for zander. Concentrate on deeper holes, bends, and below weirs where prey fish accumulate.

Key tactical tips include carrying a range of feeders and leads to cope with changing Severn flows, using strong but balanced tackle for barbel (reliable reels, robust mainline and abrasion-resistant hooklengths), and always plumbing depth carefully on the canal and commercials to find shelves and depth changes. By matching tactics to the specific water—river, canal or pool—and closely watching flow, colour and temperature, anglers in Worcester can enjoy consistent, year-round fishing for a wide range of species.
