Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Carrickfergus
Carrickfergus sits on the northern side of Belfast Lough and gives shore and small-boat anglers a mix of clean sand, broken ground and rough rock marks within a short distance. The town’s promenade, harbour walls and nearby rocky points mean you can cover a lot of different habitats without travelling far, and the semi-enclosed lough often fishes well even when the open coast is blown out.
Seasonally, the fishing in Carrickfergus is defined by water temperature and baitfish movements. From late spring through early autumn, mackerel, garfish, scad and herring push into Belfast Lough, drawing in pollock, coalfish, gurnard and occasional bass. Summer evenings around the harbour and rock edges can be hectic with mackerel and pollock crashing shoals under diving seabirds. Winter is more about codling, whiting, dogfish and rays from the deeper channels and sand flats, with bites often coming after dark on smaller tides.
Habitat wise, the front of Carrickfergus offers mainly mixed and sandy ground with patches of rock, while further towards the outer lough you’ll find heavier rough ground and kelp. Over clean sand, expect dabs, plaice, rays and dogfish; on the broken ground and rock ledges, pollock, wrasse and coalfish dominate. Deep holes and channel edges hold conger and bull huss, especially where man‑made structure such as harbour walls and rock armour meet natural reef.
From the main promenade and accessible walls, a simple beachcasting setup is effective. Use a 12–13ft surf rod with 4–5oz leads and a two-hook flapper or clipped-down rig. Baits like mackerel strip, squid, sandeel and lugworm cover most targets: worms and sandeel for flatties and whiting; squid and mackerel cocktail for rays and dogfish; larger fish or squid sections for huss and conger. Casting just beyond the rough/sand line often out-fishes blasting to the horizon, so vary distance until you find fish.
Lure fishing is productive around any rocky promontory or structure within walking distance of Carrickfergus. For pollock and coalfish, work 15–30g metal jigs, slim sandeels and soft plastics on 20–30lb braid, counting them down to just above the kelp and retrieving steadily with occasional lifts. Ballan wrasse respond well to weedless-rigged creature baits and small soft crab imitations bounced slowly through the rough stuff. Fish fluorocarbon leaders and keep drag firm enough to bully fish clear of the rocks.
Summer mackerel fishing is straightforward but timing matters. Look for calm evenings and flood tides, and cast small silver feathers or daylights, or a single 20–30g shiny metal, into any showing fish or under working birds. When the shoals are finicky, swap to smaller, darker Sabiki-style rigs and retrieve slowly with pauses. For a more selective approach, scale down to light spinning tackle and fish a single small lure or float-fished strip of mackerel at mid‑depth.
Night sessions around Carrickfergus can be particularly productive in autumn and winter. Use reflective tape on rod tips, fish two rods at staggered distances, and keep one riged with smaller hooks and worm baits for whiting and flatties while the other presents a larger cocktail bait for codling, ray or huss. The key is to read the ground at low water, mark any rough patches, gullies and sandbars, then fish those features as the tide floods back over them.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 6 beaches and bays in this area.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 3 main harbours in this area.
