Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 17:29 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Coleraine

Coleraine is perfectly placed for mixed fishing, with the lower River Bann running through town and the open Atlantic just minutes away. The river offers salmon, sea trout, pike and coarse fishing, while Portrush, Portstewart and Castlerock provide surf, rock and occasional boat opportunities for saltwater species.

Seasonally, the River Bann around Coleraine sees salmon and sea trout from late spring into autumn, with the main peak often in June–September when water levels lift. Summer brings strong coarse fishing for roach, bream and hybrids in the slower stretches and marinas, while pike remain catchable year-round, with the biggest fish generally more active in cooler months. On the coast, May–September is prime for mackerel, pollack and bass along the Causeway beaches and headlands, while codling, whiting and dogfish dominate winter surf sessions.

The Bann offers a mix of deep, slow tidal reaches, weedy margins and marina basins which all fish differently. In the town stretches, target pike along drop-offs and near any inflowing burns or structure using deadbaits on the bottom or large soft plastics and spinnerbaits. Coarse anglers do well on the slower inside bends and harbour areas; groundbait a line with brown crumb and sweet additives, then fish maggot, caster or worm on size 14–16 hooks for roach and hybrids, stepping up tackle and switching to corn or worm cocktails where bream show.

For salmon and sea trout, focus on well-defined pools, deeper channels and any broken water where the river narrows. Spinning with small tobys, flying Cs or slim spoons works when the water is coloured, while in clearer conditions scaled-down spinners or natural-patterned flies fished on a sink-tip line can be more effective. Dawn and dusk changes of light are key; keep moving between lies rather than overworking a single spot.

On the coast, Coleraine gives quick access to surf beaches like Portstewart Strand and Castlerock. For bass and flounder, look for gutters, sandbars and river mouths, especially on a flooding tide that coincides with low-light periods. Use 2–3 hook flapper rigs with lugworm or ragworm for mixed surf species, switching to streamlined pulley rigs with peeler crab or fish strips if specifically targeting bass or rays. Long cast distance helps on calmer days, but in rougher surf fish can be surprisingly close, so cover both near and far lines.

The nearby rock marks and piers around Portrush and Portstewart provide reliable pollack, coalfish and mackerel fishing in summer. Pollack respond well to 20–40g metal lures or jelly worms fished on leadheads; cast tight to kelp-covered ledges and work the lure back in a steady, pulsing retrieve. When mackerel are in, simple feather rigs or small metals cast into visible shoals are effective, and these mackerel make top-class fresh bait for conger or larger bottom species later in the tide.

Tactically, travel light and be ready to adapt. On the Bann, a selection of feeder, float and lure rods lets you switch quickly between coarse fish and predators as conditions dictate. On the coast, carry both lighter spinning gear for bass and pollack, and a heavier beachcaster for longer-range bait work. Pay close attention to tide times, water clarity and wind direction around Coleraine; small changes can substantially affect feeding windows in both the river and along the Causeway shoreline.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 9 beaches and bays in this area.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 7 main harbours in this area.
