Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Newtownards
Newtownards sits at the northern end of Strangford Lough, giving anglers fast access to one of the most productive and sheltered sea-fishing systems in the United Kingdom. Within a short drive you also have stocked and wild trout fisheries, coarse venues and pike waters, so you can switch tactics easily according to weather and season.
Strangford Lough is the headline venue. From spring into early autumn, shoals of mackerel and coalfish move into the deeper channels, with pollack, wrasse and occasional bass hunting around reefs and kelp edges. Small pirks, 20–40 g metals and slim spinners work well when fish are mid-water; on bright days, scale down to 10–20 lb leaders and smaller lures for more takes. Over clean patches and gently shelving ground you’ll pick up plaice, dabs and flounder using two- or three-hook flappers baited with ragworm, lugworm or tipped squid.
For shore anglers based in Newtownards, target the accessible piers, slipways and shorelines around the northern lough and down either side towards Portaferry. Evening and night tides are prime for dogfish, whiting and codling in the colder months. Keep rigs simple: a clipped-down pulley or a single up-and-over for distance casting with 4–5 oz leads where tidal pull is strong. Use fresh mackerel strip, squid or sandeel on 2/0–3/0 hooks when you’re hoping for thornback ray; they favour softer mud or sand in channels, especially over flooding tides.
Boat anglers launching from around the lough can work drifting patterns along drop-offs and reefy points. On neap tides, vertical jigging with small pirks or soft plastics is highly effective for pollack and coalfish; use 20–30 lb braid with a 30–40 lb fluorocarbon leader to handle rough ground. When drift speed picks up, switch to slightly heavier leads or add a small drogue to stay in the strike zone longer. In deeper, rougher corners you have chances of ling and conger eel on large fish or squid baits fished on a flowing trace.
Freshwater options near Newtownards include rivers and stillwaters that hold brown trout, sea trout and stocked rainbow trout, plus coarse and predator species. In spring and early summer, small spiders, nymphs and traditional wets do well on local trout streams; as light fades, try small black dries and emergers in slower glides. For spinning, size 1–3 Mepps-style spinners and slim 5–7 cm spoons in silver or copper perform consistently in slightly coloured water.
Coarse and predator anglers can find waters with pike, perch, roach, bream, rudd and tench within easy reach of the town. Pike respond to wobbling deadbaits, shallow-diving crankbaits and soft swimbaits fished along reedlines and drop-offs; focus on the first and last hour of light for better fish. For silver fish, fish groundbaited areas with light float or feeder tackle, using maggots, worms and sweetcorn; step up hooklengths slightly if pike are present. Year-round, carry a selection of small hooks to fine wire for roach and rudd, and slightly heavier patterns for bream and tench.
Across all venues near Newtownards, success comes from matching your approach to the conditions: downsize lines and hooks on calm, clear days, and step up weights and baits when wind and tide build. Rotating venues between lough, river and stillwater means there is usually a productive option whatever the weather or time of year.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 6 beaches and bays in this area.
