Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 16:9 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Alloa

Alloa sits on a productive stretch of the tidal River Forth, giving anglers a mix of estuary, river and nearby stillwater options within a short drive. The surrounding central belt offers year‑round prospects, from spring salmon and sea trout to winter pike and mixed coarse fishing in local ponds and canals. Structure, tide and water clarity are the key variables that determine where and how to fish around Alloa.

The River Forth at Alloa is primarily tidal, with channels, mudflats and man‑made structures creating natural holding areas. In spring and early summer, salmon and sea trout begin to move, travelling on the flooding tide and pausing in deeper gutters and along channel edges. Spinning with medium‑weight rods and 15–20 lb mainline is common; compact spoons, Tobys and slim in‑line spinners cast across the run and swung with the current often draw bites, particularly in slightly coloured water. In clearer conditions, anglers who can reach deeper channels with small, natural‑coloured plugs or lightly weighted shrimp‑style patterns on spinning gear tend to fare better.

The estuarine section around Alloa also holds flounder and occasional other flatfish. These are best targeted on the last of the flood and first of the ebb, when fish move tight to the margins and creek mouths in search of food. A simple two‑hook flapper rig with size 1–4 hooks, baited with ragworm, lugworm or small strips of mackerel, covers most situations. Use just enough lead to hold bottom in the current; too heavy and you lose natural movement, too light and you’ll drag out of the taking zone. Casting diagonally uptide and letting the rig settle into a natural arc is usually more effective than straight‑downstream lob casting.

While the town itself fronts mainly tidal water, nearby inland stretches of the Forth and its tributaries offer more traditional game fishing. Brown trout respond well from April through June to small spinners, weighted nymphs and spider patterns fished across riffles and glides. When levels are low and clear, scale down to lighter leaders and size 16–18 flies, concentrating on broken water and undercut banks where fish feel secure.

Within a short drive of Alloa there are numerous canals, ponds and commercial stillwaters that provide consistent coarse and predator sport. Pike are a key target in weedy ponds and slow canal sections. In spring and autumn, focus on drop‑offs, reed lines and any visible inflow or outflow using deadbaits such as sardine or herring on wire traces, or large soft plastics slowly worked just above the weed. Summer pike respond to early‑morning and late‑evening lure sessions, when light levels are low and baitfish are active. Perch often share the same spots; small jig heads, drop‑shot rigs and worm‑baited float tackle fished close to structure pick off the better fish.

For mixed silver fish such as roach, rudd and skimmers in local ponds and canal stretches, a straightforward approach is effective. Start by feeding modest but regular amounts of groundbait or loosefeed to draw fish into a tight area instead of scattering bait widely. A 10–13 ft float rod or light feeder rod, 2–4 lb hooklengths and size 18–14 hooks baited with maggots, pinkies or small pieces of worm work well. In winter, refine further with smaller hooks and minimal feed; in summer, step up to slightly heavier gear to handle bonus tench or carp where present.

Weather and tides strongly influence success around Alloa. On the estuary, fishing the middle part of the tide—when current is strong enough to move food but not ripping—usually produces more bites. After heavy rain, allow a day or two for levels and colour to settle before targeting salmonids, switching to flounder and coarse species when the water is very coloured. Light onshore winds can push baitfish and flatties closer to the bank, making short casting more effective than distance work.

In summary, anglers basing themselves in Alloa should match tackle and tactics to the immediate water in front of them: tougher spinning gear and tidal awareness for the Forth, refined float or feeder setups for local coarse venues, and mobile lure or deadbait tactics for pike and perch. Travelling light, watching how the water moves on each tide, and adapting to season and clarity are the defining skills for consistent results in this part of the Forth valley.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 5 beaches and bays in this area.
