Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Falkirk
Falkirk sits at the crossroads of two iconic Scottish canals and a network of stillwaters, making it a productive base for coarse, predator and light game fishing. The Forth & Clyde Canal, Union Canal and nearby club waters all offer accessible venues with consistent sport if you match your tactics to season and water type.
On the canals around Falkirk, pike, perch, roach and bream are the main targets. Spring sees fish spreading out from wintering basins into the main cuts. As water temperatures rise, travel light and cover water, focusing on junctions, moorings and turning bays. Small soft plastics, spinners and wobbling deadbaits score well for canal pike and perch, while light pole or waggler rigs with pinkies, maggots or small worms pick up mixed bags of silvers.
Through summer, the canals can turn clear and boat traffic increases, so feeding windows tighten to early morning and late evening. Fish down the track and across on the far shelf with fine tackle: 0.08–0.12 mm hooklengths, size 18–22 hooks and groundbait laced with micro pellets or chopped worm. Roach and skimmers respond well to regular, small balls of groundbait, with loose-fed caster or hemp sorting out better stamp fish. Surface ripple and shade from overhanging bushes are key holding features.
In autumn, predator fishing around Falkirk really comes into its own. Baitfish shoal up near marinas, locks and deeper pound sections, drawing in pike and perch. Scale up wire traces and use slightly larger deadbaits such as smelt, sardine or half mackerel fished under a float. Lure anglers do well with bright shads and paddle tails worked slowly along the boat channel drop-off. Watch for bankside reed beds and any inflowing drains, which often hold the better fish.
Winter canal fishing rewards patient, precise anglers. Silver fish shoal tightly in deeper stretches and basin areas. A static, small bloodworm or joker-based groundbait approach, with single maggot or pinkie on the hook, can produce heavy nets of roach and small bream on the right day. For predators, downsize to smaller deadbaits or micro-soft plastics fished ultra-slow, concentrating on the deepest known sections and around moored boats where water temperature is marginally higher.
Stillwaters and ponds in the greater Falkirk area hold carp, tench, bream and stocked trout. In warmer months, carp respond to method feeders with wafters or short hair-rigged corn tight to features, while tench patrol marginal shelves at dawn and dusk, taking worm-and-caster cocktails over dark groundbait. On trout waters, small buzzers, nymphs and mini lures fished on intermediate or floating lines work well from spring through autumn, with fry patterns coming into play late in the year.
Across all Falkirk venues, travel with a compact selection of gear, pay attention to plumbing depths and feed sparingly until you gauge fish response. The mix of canals and stillwaters means you can always find a sheltered, fishable option whatever the weather, keeping you on consistent sport throughout the year.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 9 beaches and bays in this area.
