Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 16:51 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Aberaeron

Aberaeron sits in the middle of Cardigan Bay and gives shore anglers easy access to mixed ground, clean surf beaches and a productive harbour. The town’s stone piers, shingle beaches either side of the harbour and short walks to more broken ground provide year-round fishing without needing a boat.

Seasonal patterns are key around Aberaeron. From late April through September, mackerel and garfish work along the bay on calm, clear days, often within casting range from the harbour walls and nearby beaches. Summer also brings bass tight in over the surf, especially at dawn and dusk on a flooding tide, and wrasse, pollack and smaller species around any rough or rocky features. Autumn can be excellent for bass and rays as baitfish shoals peak and water stays warm into October. Through winter, sessions turn more to whiting, codling, dab, dogfish and the odd ray, with the better fishing typically after dark and around big tides.

Habitat and marks are relatively simple to read. The town beaches are mostly shingle over sand, ideal for bass, flatfish, rays and winter species. Look for any gutters, colour changes or small banks formed by the sea – these subtle features concentrate fish. The harbour walls provide depth and structure, attracting mullet in the basin, mackerel and garfish on the outer edge in summer, and assorted bottom feeders on baits. Walks along the coast in either direction reveal mixed ground – patches of rock and reef interspersed with sand – which are prime for wrasse, pollack, bull huss and rays if you’re prepared to lose some tackle.

Common techniques depend on the species you’re targeting:

  • Bass and surf species: Standard beachcasters with 4–5 oz leads and simple pulley or two-hook flapper rigs cover most situations. Fresh lugworm, ragworm, crab and sandeel are the staple baits. In calmer conditions, 9–10 ft lure rods with surface lures, soft plastics or metal jigs can score bass along the surf line and rock edges.
  • Mackerel, garfish and summer shoal fish: Light spinning rods with 1–2 oz metal lures or small feathers work well from the harbour or beach. Keep gear light and mobile, casting to visible shoals or birds working bait.
  • Rays, smoothhounds and huss: Target the cleaner patches with strong tackle, 4/0 hooks and fish or crab baits. Evening into darkness on a flooding tide is often most productive.
  • Mullet in the harbour: Use very light coarse-style gear, fine line and small hooks, feeding bread mash and presenting flake or small artificial baits. Stealth and patience matter more than distance.

Tactical tips for Aberaeron include timing your trips around a building tide, especially the last three hours of the flood, and making the most of low-light periods for bass and predators. Westerly winds can stir up the surf and push food inshore, improving bass and flatfish sport, while settled high-pressure spells favour mackerel, garfish and mullet. Keep rigs as simple as conditions allow, use fresh local bait where possible, and stay mobile, working along the harbour walls and beach to locate active fish rather than waiting in one spot.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 8 beaches and bays in this area.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 2 main harbours in this area.
