Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Merthyr Tydfil
Merthyr Tydfil fishing is built around the upper River Taff system and a network of reservoirs and ponds that give anglers year-round options. The town sits on a prime stretch of the Taff as it runs down from the Brecon Beacons, with cold, fast, oxygen‑rich water that suits wild brown trout, grayling and increasingly popular barbel. Add in local stillwaters for carp, pike and silver fish and you have a compact but diverse fishing destination.
The River Taff around Merthyr Tydfil is narrow and pacey, with riffles, pocket water and deeper glide sections. In spring, trout and grayling respond well to small natural nymphs drifted through the seams; think size 16–18 PTNs, Hare’s Ear and slim jig nymphs presented on a long, fine leader. Spinning with 3–7 g inline spinners or small minnows can be effective in higher water, particularly along the deeper runs downstream of bridges and weirs.
Summer sees clearer, lower flows and more technical fishing. At dawn and dusk, trout rise in the smoother glides and tailouts; small dry flies and emergers matched to olives or sedge hatch patterns work well, with careful wading and long upstream casts essential in the shallow, ultra-clear water. During bright midday periods, switch back to nymphs or tiny soft plastics worked along the bottom, tight to boulders and undercut banks where fish seek shade.
In recent years, barbel and chub have become key targets on the Taff around the town and further downstream. Focus on deeper outside bends, the heads and tails of pools, and areas below any pace change. For barbel, ledger hair rigs with 8–12 mm pellets, meat or boilies fished on strong line are reliable, with small PVA bags or feeders helping to concentrate fish. Chub will also take smaller baits presented under a stick float, especially in steady glides with overhead cover such as trees, walls or bridge arches.
Merthyr Tydfil is also within easy reach of stillwater coarse and predator venues. Local ponds and small reservoirs typically hold carp, roach, perch, bream and tench, offering more sheltered options when the rivers are high. On these venues, method feeders with micros and sweetcorn, or pellet waggler tactics, score well for carp. For mixed bags, a simple waggler or light pole setup fished over a small bed of groundbait will catch roach and skimmers steadily all day.
For pike, target the deeper margins, inflow areas and any structure where baitfish congregate. In cooler months, deadbaits such as sardine or smelt fished on a semi-fixed float rig can be deadly, while in warmer water, wobbling deadbaits and medium-sized lures (spoons, spinners and soft shads) fished at varied speeds will pick off active fish. Always use appropriate wire traces and strong tackle to handle these predators safely and efficiently.
Through autumn and winter the Taff’s grayling fishing can be excellent. Czech nymphing or French leader styles with heavy bugs keep your flies down in fast, cold water, and subtle colour variations (pink, purple or orange hotspots) often trigger extra bites. On coloured water after rain, step up to larger, brighter patterns and slightly heavier leaders to maintain control and contact with your flies or lures.
Overall, success around Merthyr Tydfil comes from matching your tactics to the river’s pace and clarity, or the specific character of each stillwater. Travel light for the Taff, paying attention to water levels and reading each run before casting, and use more static, bait‑driven approaches on the lakes. By switching between river game fishing, barbel and coarse tactics, and stillwater carp and pike methods, anglers can stay on fish and enjoy consistent sport throughout the year.
