Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Cullman
Fishing in Cullman, Alabama centers on deep, clear reservoirs with abundant structure, ledges, and docks. Lewis Smith Lake, just west of Cullman, is the main draw—one of the clearest, deepest lakes in the state—and Lake Catoma on the edge of town provides a smaller, more sheltered option. Both waters reward anglers who pay attention to seasonal movements and the lake’s steep contours.
Seasonal Patterns: In late winter and early spring, spotted and largemouth bass stage on secondary points, channel swings, and the first major breaks outside spawning pockets. Jigs, Alabama rigs, and underspins worked along 15–30 foot breaks produce well on Smith, while Catoma bass relate more to shallow wood and grass with crankbaits and spinnerbaits. As water warms into April and May, bass move shallow to spawn; target protected pockets, clay points, and docks with weightless soft plastics, wacky rigs, and compact jigs.
Summer on Smith Lake pushes bass deep. Spotted bass suspend over timber, humps, and main-lake points in 25–40 feet. This is when electronics become critical—use your graph to find bait schools and fish vertically with drop-shots, spoons, and finesse swimbaits. Night fishing is productive all summer; focus on lighted docks and bluff walls with big worms and slow-rolled spinnerbaits. On Lake Catoma, early and late topwater around the dam, riprap, and shallow brush is consistent, with Texas-rigged worms and medium crankbaits taking over once the sun is high.
Fall brings shad to the backs of creeks around Cullman, and nearly every gamefish follows. Run and gun points, pockets, and bluff ends with topwaters, walking baits, and 3–4 inch swimbaits. This is prime time for schooling spotted bass on Smith—keep a spoon or small jigging bait ready for fish that push bait to the surface. Crappie stack on brush piles, standing timber, and bridge pilings in 10–20 feet; pitch small jigs or minnows just above the cover.
Habitat & Tactical Tips: Smith Lake’s defining features are its clarity and depth. Fluorocarbon line, lighter leaders, and natural bait colors are critical, especially on sunny, calm days. Target long tapering points, channel swings against bluff banks, and manmade brush piles. On clearer sections, stay off the bank and cast long toward the shoreline transitions. In more stained upper arms and feeder creeks, power techniques—squarebills, spinnerbaits, and chatterbaits—excel around laydowns and rock.
Catfish and striped fish offer additional action near Cullman. On Smith, striped and hybrid striped bass relate to bait over river channels and at the mouths of major creeks. Use live shad, flukes, or heavy swimbaits, watching your electronics for big arcs below schools of bait. Channel and blue catfish concentrate on ledges, points, and flats adjacent to deep water; anchor or slow-drift cut bait along contour breaks.
For panfish, focus on shallow brush, docks, and rocky banks in spring and early summer. Small jigs under a float or bits of worm on light line will produce bluegill and redear, especially around spawning moon phases. With its mix of big-water structure and small-lake options, the Cullman area rewards anglers who adapt to depth, clarity, and season when planning each trip.
