Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:26 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

Fishing Overview Huntsville

Fishing in Huntsville revolves around the Tennessee River system, with Wheeler Lake, Guntersville Lake upstream, and smaller area waters offering a mix of numbers and trophy potential. The main river channel, creek mouths, and man-made structure are the key patterns that repeat seasonally, whether you are targeting bass, catfish, crappie, or stripers.

Spring is prime time around Huntsville. As water temps climb into the 50s and low 60s, largemouth and smallmouth bass push shallow on Wheeler Lake’s flats, pockets, and rocky banks. Focus on staging areas just off spawning coves—secondary points, channel bends, and riprap near bridges. Suspending jerkbaits, medium-diving crankbaits, and green-pumpkin jigs shine in clearer water, while vibrating jigs and Texas-rigged plastics catch fish in stained creeks. Crappie stack up on brushpiles, stake beds, and bridge pilings; tight-line minnows or small tube jigs just above the cover. Channel edges near the mouth of creeks are reliable for early-season blue and channel catfish using cut shad or skipjack.

In summer, Huntsville anglers shift deeper. The Tennessee River current controls everything: when the dams are pulling water, bass, stripers, and catfish feed heavily on ledges, humps, and shell beds. Idle offshore and use electronics to find bait and hard-bottom spots off the main channel. Deep-diving crankbaits, Carolina rigs, big spoons, and swimbaits are staple presentations for bass. For catfish, anchor or lightly drift along channel drops with fresh cut bait; focus on depth transitions of 20–40 feet. Night fishing becomes highly productive—throw topwaters and buzzbaits around grass edges, riprap, and marinas for quality largemouth in the cooler hours.

Fall brings baitfish migrations into creeks and pockets around Huntsville, and nearly every species follows. Look for schooling activity where shad push to the surface—white bass, striped bass, and hybrids will give fast action on small spoons, inline spinners, and compact topwaters. Bass key on bait in the backs of creeks; squarebill crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and bladed jigs fished around laydowns, docks, and grass lines produce well. Crappie re-group on mid-depth brush (10–18 feet); use small jigs in natural shad and chartreuse colors and move frequently until you locate an active stack of fish.

During winter, the best fishing often centers on the main river and the lower portions of major creeks. Bass gravitate to vertical structure, bluff walls, and steep channel swings; work finesse jigs, shaky heads, and blade baits slowly near the bottom. On calm, sunny days, shallow riprap and dark-bottom banks warm faster and can briefly pull fish shallow. Catfish remain a strong winter option—target deeper channel holes and outside bends with larger cut baits and give each spot time to develop. Vertical jigging spoons in deeper holes can also produce drum, white bass, and the occasional striper.

Across all seasons, the most consistent tactical edge in Huntsville comes from reading current, structure, and bait. Pay close attention to dam generation schedules, watch for bird activity over baitfish, and use side-scan sonar to map out ledges, brush, and shell beds. Keep your lure selection simple but cover the water column: a topwater, a moving bait, and a bottom-contact presentation will handle most situations on the Huntsville stretch of the Tennessee River.

The Best Fishing Spots around Huntsville

Lake Guntersville

One of the Southeast’s premier bass fisheries, Lake Guntersville spans the Tennessee River with vast grass beds, creek mouths, and ledge systems that produce trophy largemouth year-round; peak action runs late winter through spring for pre-spawn bass, with strong summer frogging and fall shad patterns. Anglers also target crappie around bridges and brush, and catfish on river channels. Easy access from Guntersville and Scottsboro makes it a staple for tournaments and casual trips alike.

Wheeler Lake

Wheeler Lake offers classic Tennessee River fishing close to Huntsville, with renowned ledge and grass bite for largemouth and smallmouth, plus consistent crappie and blue/channel catfish. Spring brings prespawn bass to pockets and flats, summer focuses on deep humps and current breaks, and winter shines for smallmouth and sauger near current. Launches and bank access near Decatur and Rogersville keep it popular all season.

Guntersville Dam

Below Guntersville Dam, the tailrace churns up prime current seams for smallmouth/largemouth bass, stripers/hybrids, crappie, and seasonal sauger; catfish prowl the deep eddies year-round. Peak periods include spring and fall when baitfish stack in the flow and winter cold snaps for sauger. Bank platforms and nearby ramps provide excellent access on both sides near Grant and Scottsboro.

Wheeler Dam

Wheeler Dam is famous for hard-pulling smallmouth, striped bass surges under turbines, and consistent sauger in cold months, with catfish and drum in the deeper washouts. Anglers time their trips to generation schedules for current-driven feeds, while summer evenings shine for topwater schooling bass. Shore access, fishing piers, and multiple ramps around Rogersville keep pressure high and catches steady.

Madison County Lake

Just northeast of the city, Madison County Lake is a convenient, well-managed impoundment known for largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and channel catfish, with steady action for bank anglers and small boats. Spring prespawn bass and bedding bream, summer evening catfish, and fall crappie around structure are popular patterns. Close proximity to Gurley and Huntsville makes it a go-to local spot.

Flint River

The Flint River offers a scenic, wade-and-paddle fishery for spotted/Alabama bass, sunfish, and seasonal smallmouth closer to the Tennessee confluence, with occasional crappie in deeper pools. Best windows are spring through early summer on moving water with topwater and finesse presentations, and fall when baitfish run. Access points near Hays Nature Preserve and Gurley draw steady local pressure.

Elk River

Feeding Wheeler Lake near Rogersville, the Elk River features clear current, bluff banks, and creek mouths that hold smallmouth/largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish. Spring shines for prespawn bass and crappie, summer for deep-channel catfish, and fall for smallmouth on baitfish schools. Boat ramps and some bridge-area bank spots make it popular for day trips from Huntsville.

Paint Rock River

The Paint Rock River meanders through scenic valleys east of Huntsville with a gentle flow that suits kayaks and bank fishing, producing spotted/Alabama bass, sunfish, and seasonal crappie. Action peaks in spring and early summer with rising water, while late summer mornings and fall draw consistent bites around laydowns and bends. Access near Paint Rock and Hollytree keeps it a regional favorite.
