Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:38 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Fresno

Fresno fishing revolves around a network of reservoirs, rivers, and canals that fish well 12 months of the year. Within roughly an hour you can hit Millerton Lake, Pine Flat Lake, Shaver Lake, the Kings River, and a maze of irrigation canals, each with different seasonal patterns. Planning your day starts with matching the time of year to the right water and species.

From late winter through spring, rising water and warming temps kick off the best action around Fresno. At Pine Flat Lake, spotted bass slide shallow onto chunk rock and flooded brush; work 3–4 inch finesse worms, Ned rigs, and small swimbaits along points and transition banks in 5–20 feet. On warming afternoons, jerkbaits and small crankbaits cover water and draw reaction bites. Millerton Lake fishes similarly, with spotted and smallmouth bass concentrating on rocky structure and wind-blown shorelines.

Trout and kokanee are a strong draw in the nearby Sierra lakes. Shaver Lake and other higher-elevation reservoirs shine from spring into early summer. Troll dodger–hoochie combos, small spoons, or spinner rigs 15–45 feet down early in the season, then follow the thermocline deeper as surface temps climb. Early morning is prime; run a spread at varied depths until you mark consistent bait and arches on sonar, then lock in that depth range.

Summer around Fresno means low, clear water and strong sun, so shift to a low-light strategy. At Millerton and Pine Flat, target bass deep on main-lake points, submerged river channels, and offshore humps. Drop-shot rigs with 4–6 inch straight-tail worms, football jigs dragged slowly, and vertical spooning over bait schools are reliable patterns. Night fishing can be excellent: slow-roll dark spinnerbaits or big worms along rocky banks for quality bass, and soak cut bait or chicken liver on bottom for channel catfish in coves and creek mouths.

The Kings River below the dams offers moving-water options. In cooler months, trout and holdover fish key on current seams, deep runs, and undercut banks; small inline spinners, drifting nightcrawlers, and bubble-and-fly rigs work well. As water warms, focus on smallmouth bass and warm-water species by targeting eddies behind boulders, riffle tails, and shaded undercuts with 3-inch grubs, small square-bill crankbaits, and topwater poppers early and late in the day.

Fresno’s extensive canals and ponds produce underrated fishing, especially for bank anglers. Look for intersections, bridges, and areas with visible current or slight color change. Bass and catfish patrol these pinch points. Use compact Texas-rigged creature baits to pitch to cover, and simple slip-sinker rigs baited with cut mackerel, shrimp, or prepared dough for catfish and carp. Stealth matters here: travel light, keep noise down, and work steadily along the bank rather than camping in one spot.

Fall might be the most consistent season for the Fresno area. Cooling water pushes baitfish shallow again, and bass feed aggressively on flats and secondary points. Cover water with small lipless crankbaits, flukes, and walking topwaters on breezy days, then slow down with jigs or finesse plastics when the wind lays down. As winter sets in, downsize your presentations, fish slower, and concentrate on steep rock, channel swings, and any mid-lake structure you can locate on electronics.

The Best Fishing Spots around Fresno

Millerton Lake

Minutes northeast of Fresno, Millerton Lake is a sprawling reservoir on the San Joaquin River known for spotted and smallmouth bass, with largemouth, crappie, and channel catfish also common; spring prespawn and early summer topwater bites are popular, while winter and early spring see trout plants near deeper structure—when the bass action slows here, many anglers also hop to Pine Flat Lake or Shaver Lake.

Pine Flat Lake

East of Fresno in the Sierra foothills, Pine Flat Lake offers excellent multi‑species action, highlighted by spotted bass, smallmouth, and largemouth around rocky points and coves, plus seasonal trout in cooler months and strong catfish bites on warm evenings; the lake’s size favors boaters, but shore anglers score around marinas and access points—nearby tailwater on the Kings River extends the fishery.

Shaver Lake

A popular mountain reservoir northeast of Fresno, Shaver Lake is renowned for kokanee salmon and planted rainbow trout, with brown trout and smallmouth also present; summer trolling with dodgers and corn‑tipped rigs is a staple for kokanee, while spring and fall bring productive shoreline action—many anglers pair a Shaver trip with nearby Huntington Lake when chasing trout.

San Joaquin River

Flowing right through the region, the San Joaquin River around Fresno provides accessible fishing for catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, carp, and seasonal striped bass in certain reaches; spring and early summer see active bass near current breaks and wood, while warm nights produce steady catfish—popular access includes areas near Lost Lake Park and stretches below Friant Dam.

Kings River

Below Pine Flat Dam, the Kings River tailwater fishes well year‑round for rainbow trout in colder flows and offers smallmouth, spotted bass, and catfish downstream; anglers target riffles, seams, and deeper pools in spring and fall for trout, shifting to rocky banks and shade for bass in summer—many combine a day here with a stop at Pine Flat Lake.

Hensley Lake

Northwest of Fresno near Hidden Dam, Hensley Lake is a convenient low‑elevation reservoir known for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish; spring brings strong bass bites on points and brush, while summer evenings see solid catfish action—when the bite slows, anglers often head up to Eastman Lake or Millerton Lake.

Eastman Lake

A short drive north of Fresno near Raymond, Eastman Lake has a reputation for quality largemouth bass with crappie and catfish as reliable backups; prespawn and postspawn periods are prime around submerged wood and creek channels, and summer nights produce catfish—many anglers pair Eastman with nearby Hensley Lake for a two‑lake day.

Huntington Lake

High in the Sierra northeast of Fresno, Huntington Lake is a clear, cool reservoir best known for rainbow trout with some browns; summer trolling along the main channels and windward shorelines is productive, while shoreline anglers find success in spring and fall—travelers often combine it with Shaver Lake for a mountain fishing weekend.

Mendota Pool

West of Fresno at the confluence of the San Joaquin and Kings systems, Mendota Pool is a well‑known warm‑water fishery featuring striped bass at times, plus largemouth, catfish, carp, and crappie; spring and early summer bring active current‑edge bites, and summer nights are popular for catfish—anglers often rotate between here and nearby San Joaquin River stretches depending on flows.
