Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Madera
Madera, California fishing revolves around a network of versatile waters: Eastman Lake and Hensley Lake just east of town, stretches of the San Joaquin River, and a short drive to Sierra foothill creeks and reservoirs. The area is primarily a warmwater fishery with excellent bass, crappie and catfish action, plus seasonal trout opportunities in cooler inflows and higher-elevation waters.
Seasonal patterns drive the bite around Madera. Late winter through spring is prime for largemouth and smallmouth bass at Eastman and Hensley. As water temps climb into the mid‑50s and low 60s, bass move shallow to staging areas, creek channel edges and pea-gravel banks. By April–May, look for spawning fish in coves, flooded brush and protected pockets. Summer pushes bass deeper to main-lake points, submerged humps and the first major breaklines, with low-light topwater windows at dawn and dusk. Fall brings some of the best action of the year as cooling temps concentrate baitfish along wind-blown banks and mid-lake structure.
Habitat and key areas are straightforward once you understand each lake. Eastman Lake is known for its quality bass and crappie; work the old river channel, standing timber, rocky points and any remaining brush. Hensley Lake tends to run more off-color, favoring power-fishing along riprap, clay banks and creek arms. In both lakes, seasonal water level changes expose then flood brush lines—mark high-percentage areas when the water is low so you can return once they’re submerged. On the San Joaquin River, target outside bends, deeper troughs, logjams and transitions where gravel meets softer substrate for catfish, carp and the occasional striped bass.
Common techniques are classic Central Valley reservoir patterns. For bass in spring, finesse plastics shine: 4–6 inch worms on drop-shots, wacky-rigged stickbaits and small creature baits on Texas rigs catch numbers and size around rock and brush. In stained water, try chartreuse or darker hues with some flake. As fish pull out deeper in summer, switch to Carolina rigs, football jigs and deep-diving crankbaits to probe 15–30 feet. On windy banks, spinnerbaits and bladed jigs cover water quickly and often outproduce.
Crappie fishing around Madera peaks from late winter into spring when fish stack on creek channels, submerged trees and marina areas. Small jigs (1/32–1/16 oz) in shad, white or chartreuse patterns under a fixed or slip float are reliable. Use electronics to find suspended schools, and keep your bait just above them. Through summer, target crappie at first and last light near deeper brush and vertical timber.
Catfish tactics are simple and productive on warm nights. Channel and white catfish at Eastman, Hensley and in the San Joaquin River respond well to cut shad, chicken liver, prepared dough baits and nightcrawlers fished on slip-sinker rigs. Focus on the upper ends of coves, creek mouths and gentle flats adjacent to deeper water. After sundown, slide closer to the bank as catfish roam the shallows.
For shore anglers, both Eastman and Hensley offer fishable points, riprap dams and accessible coves. Bring a couple of rod setups: one lighter spinning combo for jigging and float rigs, and a heavier rod for bottom-fishing catfish or soaking nightcrawlers for mixed species. Boat and kayak anglers gain access to offshore structure, but the same rules apply—locate bait, pay attention to water temperature and clarity, and adjust lure profile and color accordingly.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 2 beaches and bays in this area.
