Fishing Overview DeLand

DeLand, Florida sits on one of the most productive stretches of the St. Johns River, giving anglers year-round access to varied fisheries: winding river channels, cypress sloughs, clear spring-fed runs, and shallow lakes and pads. The primary draw is largemouth bass, but the river’s flow and structure also support excellent crappie, bream, catfish, and seasonal striped bass and shad fishing, all within easy reach of town launches.

Seasonal patterns drive success around DeLand. From December through March, bass stage along channel edges, shell bars, and outside bends near spawning bays like Lake Beresford and surrounding backwaters. This is prime time for slow-rolled lipless crankbaits, suspending jerkbaits, and big golden shiners drifted along grass lines. As water warms in spring, bass push shallow onto eelgrass flats, lily pad fields, and flooded reeds; soft plastics like weightless flukes, stickworms, and creature baits pitched to isolated pads or wood excel.

Summer shifts the bite deeper and closer to current. On hot, still days, focus on the main St. Johns River channel, creek mouths, and spring runs where cooler water and moving current stack fish. Bass and hybrid stripers often hold on outside bends, submerged timber, and shell bars; Carolina-rigged worms, deep-diving crankbaits, and live shiners slow-trolled along the drop are reliable producers. Early and late in the day, work topwaters like poppers and walking baits around docks and hydrilla edges for explosive strikes.

Fall brings a strong feeding push as baitfish migrate along the river. Watch for surface schooling activity where stripers, sunshine bass, and bass corral shad on points and intersections. Small chrome lipless crankbaits, spoons, and 3–4 inch swimbaits burn just under the surface are ideal for these short, aggressive windows.

Panfish and crappie are a major part of DeLand’s fishery. Black crappie (specks) bite best from late fall through early spring. Target channel drops, brush piles, and deeper holes off the main river and adjacent lakes using small minnows on light-wire hooks or 1/16–1/32 oz jigs in white, chartreuse, and natural shad colors. Slowly slow-trolling (spider rigging) or long-lining jigs at varying depths helps dial in the school. Bluegill and shellcracker peak late spring through early summer on sandy pockets, pad edges, and shell beds; crickets, red worms, and small beetle spins fished on ultralight gear keep rods bent all day.

Catfish and rough fish are steady options year-round. Channel and white catfish stack on bends, bridge pilings, and deep holes. Cut bait, chicken liver, and nightcrawlers on slip-sinker rigs anchored just off the main current line will consistently produce. Bowfin and gar prowl weedlines and backwater sloughs; they readily take live bait, small cut bait, and even bass lures, offering hard fights for anglers who don’t mind toothy surprises.

Key tactical tips for DeLand: read current and edges first, then refine by cover. Focus on intersections where feeder creeks meet the St. Johns, transitions from sand to muck or shell, and any isolated cypress, laydown, or pad clump adjacent to deeper water. Polarized glasses are crucial for spotting grass lines, shell bars, and subtle current seams. Downsized tackle and natural colors work best in clear spring-fed water; in the main river’s darker tannic flow, darker profiles and chartreuse accents improve visibility.

Boat access is excellent via public ramps on the St. Johns near DeLand, and the river’s slow flow is friendly to kayaks and small jon boats. Shore anglers can target seawalls, public docks, and accessible banks near bends and marinas, especially at dawn, dusk, and on overcast days when fish roam tighter to the bank.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
