Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 13:50 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

Tide Coefficient at 11:22 am is 103

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Punta Gorda

Punta Gorda sits on the upper end of Charlotte Harbor, giving anglers direct access to expansive grass flats, mangrove shorelines, creeks, and the open Gulf of Mexico. The mix of saltwater, brackish, and nearby freshwater creates a multilayered fishery where you can target snook and redfish at daybreak, seatrout on the flats by mid-morning, and tarpon or nearshore grouper in the afternoon.

Seasonal patterns are critical here. Spring brings a surge of bait into Charlotte Harbor, firing up snook, redfish, and trout on the flats from Alligator Creek to Pirate Harbor. Late spring through summer is prime time for tarpon along the Harbor edges, Boca Grande Pass, and the nearby Gulf beaches; focus on calm mornings, tide changes, and rolling pods of fish. Summer heat pushes snook deep into mangrove shade lines, creek mouths, and around residential docks with current. Fall is arguably the most consistent inshore season, with schooling reds and aggressive trout feeding hard on the flats and shorelines. Winter cools water temps, concentrating sheepshead, black drum, and mangrove snapper around bridges, docks, and rock piles, while trout slide into deeper potholes and channels.

Key habitat types around Punta Gorda include shallow grass flats, mangrove shorelines, oyster bars, channels, and artificial structure. Grass flats in 2–5 feet hold spotted seatrout, ladyfish, and Spanish mackerel; drift-fishing these areas with popping corks and soft plastics is highly effective. Mangrove shorelines from Ponce de Leon Park down the east side of Charlotte Harbor are classic snook and redfish country. Target points, creek mouths, and undercut banks on moving water. Deeper channels and ICW cuts hold tarpon in season and year-round snapper and grouper on hard bottom and ledges just outside the Harbor.

Productive techniques are straightforward and adaptable. Inshore, a 7–7’6” medium spinning rod with 10–20 lb braid and a 20–30 lb fluorocarbon leader covers most situations. For snook and redfish, work soft plastic jerkbaits, paddle tails, or topwaters tight to the bushes at first light and high tide; cast parallel to mangroves to keep your lure in the strike zone longer. On the flats, use popping corks with shrimp or 3–4 inch plastics; pop, pause, and let the bait hang to draw trout and mackerel. Live shrimp, white bait, and pinfish under a float or free-lined are deadly around docks and bridges for snapper, sheepshead, and snook.

Tarpon and nearshore tactics require a step up in gear. For tarpon, many anglers drift live crabs or threadfin herring along Harbor edges and passes with 40–60 lb braid and 60–80 lb fluorocarbon leaders. Watch your sonar for bait schools and mark depth transitions where fish stage. Just offshore, target reefs and ledges for gag and red grouper with bottom rigs, 40–80 lb braid, and cut bait or large live baits. Keep a pitch rod rigged with a freelined live bait for cobia and tripletail that appear near buoys and crab trap floats.

Local tactical tips: fish the windward shoreline when a breeze pushes bait and surface chop into the mangroves; dirty, wind-blown water often outfishes clear water here. Plan around tide changes—snook and reds feed hardest on moving water, especially when it begins to rise over oyster bars and shallow edges. In winter cold fronts, slow down and downsize; finesse jigs and shrimp on light leaders in deeper holes and channel edges will outproduce speed presentations. Whether launching at Laishley Park, Ponce de Leon Park, or nearby ramps, stay mobile, read bird and bait activity, and adjust your plan to where the life is most concentrated.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 4 beaches and bays in this area.

Alligator Bay - 7.37477848658km , Muddy Bay - 7.66656674596km , Whidden Bay - 8.87218164657km , Deerfly Bay - 13.51306310596km

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 5 main harbours in this area.
