Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Sanford
Fishing in Sanford, Florida centers on the St. Johns River and Lake Monroe, a big, shallow lake right off downtown. These connected waters create a mix of open-lake, river-channel, and backwater habitat that holds fish all year. The public shoreline, marina areas, and nearby ramps make it easy to launch bass boats, jon boats, and kayaks, or simply fish from the bank.
Seasonal patterns drive most of the action. From late winter through spring, largemouth bass push into shallow grass beds, cattails, and protected canals off Lake Monroe to spawn. Look for hard-bottom pockets, isolated pads, and reed edges in 2–5 feet of water, and work soft plastics, weightless flukes, and floating worms slowly. As temperatures rise into late spring and summer, bass slide to deeper shell bars, river edges, and current breaks along the St. Johns. Crankbaits, Carolina rigs, and big ribbon-tail worms fished along drops and channel swings become reliable producers.
For black crappie (specks), late fall through early spring is prime. Slow-troll or long-line small jigs (1/16–1/32 oz) and live minnows across open-water flats and subtle depressions in Lake Monroe, watching your electronics for bait balls and suspended schools. During the spawn, focus on reed clumps, brush, and dock pilings in 3–6 feet of water. Specks in the Sanford area often concentrate near subtle points, old creek channels, and any isolated wood.
Catfish and panfish provide dependable action nearly year-round. Channel and white catfish stack up along the St. Johns River ledges, around bridge pilings, and near marinas where current pushes food. Fish cut bait, chicken liver, or commercial stink baits on simple bottom rigs just off the drop. Bluegill and shellcracker bite best around new and full moon phases in spring and early summer, bedding on sandy patches near grass edges, docks, and seawalls. Use red worms, crickets, or small jigs under a float, moving until you contact a bed, then stay put and work it thoroughly.
The St. Johns River itself is a highway for roaming gamefish. Current seams, outside bends, and intersections with feeder creeks are top ambush zones. Bass hold tight to laydowns, eelgrass lines, and shell bars; try pitching Texas-rigged plastics and creature baits into heavy cover or slow-rolling spinnerbaits along weedlines during low light. In cooler months, work lipless crankbaits and medium-diving plugs along channel edges to cover water efficiently. On calm mornings and evenings, topwater frogs and walking baits draw explosive strikes around pads, mats, and flooded shoreline grass.
Practical tips for Sanford anglers include fishing early and late in the day during hot months, keying on wind-blown banks in Lake Monroe where bait stacks up, and using electronics to locate subtle shell patches and drop-offs. Water levels and flow in the St. Johns can change how fish set up, so pay close attention to current direction and speed, positioning your boat or kayak to present baits naturally. Whether you launch from the Sanford Riverwalk area, nearby public ramps, or slip a kayak into a quiet side canal, the combination of river and lake habitat gives you multiple patterns to run in any season.
