Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:2 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

Fishing Overview Tallahassee

Fishing in Tallahassee, Florida centers on a network of productive natural lakes and reservoirs, with fast saltwater options just a short drive south. Local anglers rotate between Lake Talquin, Lake Jackson, Lake Iamonia, and the smaller city lakes for freshwater action, then slide down to St. Marks, Shell Point, and the Ochlockonee Bay marshes when the urge for redfish and trout hits.

Seasonal patterns around Tallahassee are driven by water temperature. Late winter through early spring is prime for largemouth bass on Lake Talquin, Jackson, and the city lakes. Bass stage along channel swings, points, and reed edges before moving shallow to spawn. As water warms into the 60s–70s, crappie ("specks") and bluegill turn on in the same lakes, especially when they stack on brush, docks, and submerged timber. Summer pushes bass and stripers deeper on Talquin, while night fishing for catfish and dock-shooting for crappie stay consistent. Fall brings some of the best all-around action: shad and other baitfish gather, bass feed aggressively on points and schools over flats, and inshore redfish and speckled trout chew hard on the grass edges near St. Marks and Ochlockonee Bay.

Key freshwater habitats include Lake Talquin’s river-ledges, standing timber, and long points, Lake Jackson’s grass lines and shallow flats, and Lake Iamonia’s cypress-lined shorelines and pads. On Talquin, focus on ledge drops, humps, and creek mouths when the sun is high. In Jackson and Iamonia, bass and panfish often stay surprisingly shallow; pad fields, maidencane edges, and submerged grass patches are everyday producers.

Effective techniques vary by water and season. For bass on Talquin, deep-diving crankbaits, Carolina-rigged soft plastics, and heavy football jigs dragged along the old river channel are staples. In the grassier lakes like Jackson, weightless soft-plastic stickbaits, topwater frogs, and swim jigs excel in and around vegetation. For spring crappie, slow-trolling (spider-rigging) small jigs and minnows over creek channels and flats is a top tactic, while many local anglers also dip minnows around brush piles and dock pilings. Bluegill and shellcracker bite well on worms or crickets under a small float, presented next to lily pads, cypress knees, or sandy pockets.

Inshore saltwater options lie mainly to the south. The flats and creeks near St. Marks Lighthouse, Shell Point, and Ochlockonee Bay offer redfish, seatrout, flounder, and seasonal Spanish mackerel. Look for potholes and slight depth changes on the grass flats; drift and fan-cast with soft plastic paddle-tails on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads or suspending twitch baits. Reds often roam tighter to the shoreline, oyster bars, and creek mouths; a weedless soft plastic or gold spoon worked along these edges covers water efficiently. In cooler months, focus on darker mud bottoms and sun-warmed pockets in the back of creeks, where trout and reds concentrate.

Practical tactical tips for Tallahassee include fishing early and late in the day during the summer heat, downsizing line and lures when the water is clear on Lake Jackson and Iamonia, and paying attention to wind direction on the larger lakes and coastal flats. Side imaging or good mapping dramatically speeds up the search for Talquin’s ledges and offshore brush. For shore-bound anglers, city lakes, public piers, and causeway access toward the coast provide reliable opportunities without a boat.

The Best Fishing Spots around Tallahassee

Lake Talquin

A sprawling impoundment west of Tallahassee, Lake Talquin is famed for largemouth bass, crappie (speck), and strong spring bluegill/shellcracker bites. Anglers work submerged timber, creek channels, and hydrilla edges; winter crappie stack on deeper structure, while bass relate to windblown points and shad schools in fall. Multiple ramps and park access make it friendly for both bank and boat anglers, and it’s a top alternative to Lake Jackson when water clarity shifts.

Lake Jackson

North of downtown, Lake Jackson is a shallow, grass-filled natural lake renowned for trophy largemouth bass, with seasonal action for crappie and bream. Work eelgrass edges, lily pads, and depressions; early spring and low-light topwater bites can be excellent, while winter crappie concentrate near deeper holes. Public ramps and roadside pull-offs offer access, and it pairs well with a day trip to Lake Iamonia when water levels fluctuate.

Apalachee Bay

South of Tallahassee along the Big Bend, Apalachee Bay offers broad grass flats and oyster structure for spotted seatrout, red drum, and seasonal Spanish mackerel. Drift the flats with jig-and-plastic or popping corks in spring and fall, or sight-fish edges on clear winter days; summer brings bait schools and topwater action at dawn. Shore access around the St. Marks Lighthouse and small craft launches complement numerous boat ramps.

St. Marks River

Flowing to the Gulf at the town of St. Marks, this river’s lower reaches mix freshwater and salt, producing redfish, trout, and flounder near oyster bars, while upstream bends hold bass and bream. Work moving tides with jigs and shrimp imitations; cooler months bring clearer water and steady trout action, while summer bait pushes fire up dawn topwater strikes. It’s an easy hop to the open flats of Apalachee Bay when conditions allow.

Wakulla River

A spring-fed river known for clear water and steady flow, the Wakulla offers largemouth bass, bream, and seasonal lower-river shots at redfish and trout where it approaches the coast. Subtle current seams, cypress knees, and grasslines hold fish year-round; finesse plastics and small crankbaits shine in bright conditions. Kayakers and small boats do well here, with quick saltwater access via nearby St. Marks.

Ochlockonee Bay

At the mouth of the Ochlockonee River, this protected bay is a favorite for red drum, speckled trout, and seasonal runs of Spanish mackerel. Target oyster bars, channel edges, and grass flats on moving tides; spring and fall offer prime trout drifts, while summer dawns can bring fast redfish bites along shorelines. It’s a short run to the surf at Alligator Point when the weather is right.

Alligator Point

This sandy point between Alligator Harbor and the Gulf offers surf and bay opportunities for redfish, trout, and migrating Spanish mackerel. Fish cuts and points with spoons or jigs when bait is present; calm mornings favor topwaters, while winter fronts can push fish tight to structure. Launch nearby to access the protected waters of Alligator Harbor or work the open Gulf surf from shore.

Lake Miccosukee

East of Tallahassee, Lake Miccosukee is a shallow, vegetated lake known for strong crappie and bream fishing, with solid largemouth bass around pads and cypress. Work pockets in the grass with floats and minnows for specks in cooler months; warm seasons favor frogs and punching for bass. When levels are right, it makes a great one-two plan with nearby Lake Iamonia.

Lake Iamonia

A large prairie lake north of Tallahassee, Lake Iamonia offers seasonal action for largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill along grasslines, cypress edges, and deeper holes. Cooler months concentrate crappie, while spring brings bedding bream and active bass on soft plastics and spinnerbaits. It’s a quieter alternative to Lake Jackson when clarity or pressure shifts.
