Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Calhoun
Calhoun, Georgia fishing revolves around the Oostanaula River corridor and its feeder creeks, backed up by farm ponds and small public lakes scattered across Gordon County. The mix of flowing water and still water gives anglers consistent chances at largemouth and spotted bass, multiple catfish species, crappie, and panfish, with bonus shots at stripers, hybrids, gar, and carp when conditions line up.
Seasonal patterns start early on the Oostanaula. By late February into March, spotted and largemouth bass push to rocky banks, eddies, and shallow wood near creek mouths. Jigs, compact crankbaits, and 3–4 inch swimbaits fished slowly along current breaks are productive. Crappie stage in deeper eddies and outside bends, then slide to brush and laydowns as water temps approach the low 60s. Vertical jigging small tube jigs or marabou jigs just off bottom is a reliable approach. Catfish feed well on warming flats and along channel edges; cut shad or chicken-based baits on Carolina rigs pick off channel and blue cats.
Summer in the Calhoun area is defined by current and shade. On bright days, focus on the main Oostanaula channel, wing dams, bridge pilings, and shaded banks. Spotted bass hold tight to rock and fast seams; a 1/4–3/8 oz shaky head with a straight-tail worm or a small topwater walker at dawn can be outstanding. Largemouth orient more to wood cover in slower side channels, backwaters, and ponds. Flipping Texas-rigged creature baits and pitching wacky-rigged stick worms to visible cover is dependable. Night fishing is extremely effective in July–August: slow-roll black spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, or big ribbontail worms along shallow rock for bass and toss stink baits or cut bait into deeper holes for catfish.
In fall, baitfish migrate along the river and into creek arms, and predators follow. Look for surface activity where shad are pushed against banks or into pockets. Small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and lipless cranks that match local shad sizes excel for bass and white bass. Crappie regroup on mid-depth brush and channel bends; target 8–15 feet of water with minnows or small plastics under fixed or slip floats. Catfish prowl along ledges and outside bends—anchor just upstream of sharp drops, cast multiple rods at different depths, and let scent carry with the current.
Winter fishing around Calhoun rewards slow, precise presentations. Bass stack on the deepest available rock, bridge foundations, and outside-bend ledges. Use jig-and-trailer combos, blade baits, and tight-wobbling crankbaits crawled slowly along bottom. Crappie concentrate in deeper holes; focus on small, natural-colored jigs and light line. Catfish still bite, especially on mild fronts—present smaller pieces of cut bait and give each hole more time before moving.
- Key habitats: river bends with visible current seams, riprap banks near bridges, submerged timber, brush piles in ponds, and shallow mud or sand flats adjacent to the main channel.
- Tactical tips: use heavier jigheads and sinkers when the Oostanaula runs high; downsize baits and lines in clear, low water. Polarized glasses help you read current and spot laydowns just under the surface.
- Access strategy: bank anglers should prioritize bridge crossings, public river pull-offs, and park shorelines, while small boats, kayaks, and jon boats shine for reaching secluded bends and backwaters.
Whether you’re local or visiting, a simple, high-confidence setup for Calhoun is a medium spinning rod with 8–10 lb line, a box of jigs and soft plastics, and a second heavier combo rigged for catfish or stripers with cut bait or live bait matched to local forage.
