Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Newnan
Fishing around Newnan, GA centers on classic Piedmont reservoirs, fertile rivers and countless small ponds, giving anglers multiple options within 30–60 minutes of town. West Point Lake, the Chattahoochee River chain, smaller municipal lakes and private farm ponds all produce largemouth bass, spotted bass, crappie, catfish and panfish throughout the year.
Seasonal patterns drive most success around Newnan. In late winter and early spring, bass and crappie stage on main-lake points, creek-channel swings and the first significant cover inside creeks. Slow-rolled spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits and shaky-head worms catch pre-spawn bass, while crappie stack on brush piles and bridge pilings and readily hit minnows or small jigs. As water warms into the 60s, both species move shallow to spawn in pockets, coves and protected flats; this is prime time for light Texas rigs, wacky worms and bobber-and-minnow setups.
By summer, Newnan-area lake fish push to deeper structure: channel ledges, humps, standing timber and bluff banks. Early and late, work topwaters over points and riprap; as the sun climbs, switch to Carolina rigs, football jigs and deep-diving crankbaits in 12–25 feet. Spotted bass and striped/hybrid bass around the Chattahoochee chain chase schooling shad—keep a spoon or small swimbait ready for surface feeds. Night fishing for bass and catfish is productive on rock banks and around lighted docks. Fall brings cooling water and a strong shad migration into creeks; bass follow, making squarebills, spinnerbaits and flukes excellent search baits in the backs of coves and along windblown banks.
Habitat and locations near Newnan include rocky points, red-clay banks, standing timber, submerged roadbeds, man-made brush piles and dock fields. On larger reservoirs, focus on main-lake and secondary points that intersect creek channels—these are year-round travel routes for bass and crappie. Look for transitions where chunk rock meets clay or sand, as baitfish and crawfish concentrate there. In ponds and small lakes, target the dam face, inflow corners, any visible wood and the outside edge of shoreline grass.
Techniques and tactics should match the dominant forage—mostly threadfin shad and bluegill. For bass, staple Newnan-area lures include green pumpkin finesse worms, shaky heads, 3–4 inch swimbaits, white/chartreuse spinnerbaits and medium-running crankbaits in shad patterns. Downsize during cold fronts and fish slower along bottom contour. For crappie, use 1/16–1/8 oz jigs in chartreuse, blue/white or black/blue, tight-lined vertically over brush or slow-trolled along creek channels. Panfish respond well to worms or crickets under a float around docks, laydowns and shallow brush.
Catfish anglers do well on West Point Lake and area rivers using cut shad, chicken liver or commercial stink baits on simple bottom rigs. Focus on outside bends, channel edges and the base of riprap banks, especially at night. Regardless of species, a small sonar unit and a basic understanding of contour maps dramatically improve results around Newnan, helping you stay on key structure instead of just visible shoreline cover.
